Getting New Equipment From ISP

I have a C8-Pro running platform version 2.3.9.200.

On Friday I will be getting a new modem because my ISP is switching me from DSL to Fiber. Finally getting into the land of the modern folk. Lol. When they do this I know I will get a new IP for my hub. I have a couple questions.

(1). I am assuming the hub will adapt and update all that info itself? Is that correct? Then to access from my laptop I will just put in the new IP address?

(2). What do I need to do to change my mobile app over to make it work with the new IP locally and remote admin? I pay for that service and surprisingly use it a lot.

Thank you guys for all your help. This is an amazing community.

Do you know if you have a separate modem and router, or does your ISP provide you a unit that combines the modem and router in one device?

  • If you have a separate router, nothing will change, your hub will have the same IP.

  • If you have a combined modem/router, then hub IP will change unless you've set a static IP on the hub (which we usually don't recommend).

If you have a combined modem/router, then after setting up the new ISP hardware, use the following on your laptop connected to your new local network to find you hub's new address:

http://my.hubitat.com/

That will prompt you to log into your hubitat account, and then you can choose the option to find your hub.

Note the current ip's and MAC addr's of the hub and any other iot devices you use with it. Write these down.

Make sure that new router is using same subnet as your old system (ie. 192.168.1.x or 10.0.1.x etc)

Make DHCP reservations for everything on your list.

This will ensure everything works the same way it did...

Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment at this time but a couple things indicate it will be a modem/router combo unit. All the older units I have had from my ISP has been combo units so I don't suspect they would change. I asked them through chat if they could just assign the old IP address in the new modem and they told me no they couldn't do that.

Thank you I will use that link to find my new hub and get the new IP.

The mobile app allows you to search for hubs on your network. Your phone and the hub need to both be connected to your new network, same subnet:

24-11-12-697

Thank you. I have already written down the IP and MAC for the hub. I can do so for other devices. I never thought about them.

Just to clarify anything that is connected to Hubitat should not be interfered with. Is that correct? It will only change being able to access the UI. Is that correct?

All that changes is the IP address of the hub, connected Zigbee and Z-Wave devices don't care about that change.

However, any integrations you've added that rely on your hub's IP address will need to be updated...

The only thing that I have connected like that which I am aware of is Amazon Alexa. Everything else is local only to Hubitat. Will this change affect the connection with Alexa? If so do you have any suggestions on correcting this?

So based off of this it appears that once I redo the find my hub and choose it with the new IP address then the app would be linked to the hub and use the new IP address to access it. Is that correct?

I've never used the Alexa integration but I suspect you will have to update an IP in the settings. Suggest you open the Alexa integration app and take a look at the settings there/how it is set up.

Someone else who's used it will have to provide more info...

If you follow my instructions nothing will change for you at all.

I looked at the Amazon Echo Skill on Hubitat and I can not find anything in there about an IP address or where to enter one. I also looked in the Alexa app at the Hubitat Skill and I don't see anything there. The documentation in the Hubitat documents doesn't mention it in the setup process either. Just that when you activate the Hubitat Skill in the Alexa app you log in using your Hubitat ID and password.

download angry ip scanner, and you can note all your devices through that. You can get both the mac and the ip

I will ask the install technician to check this but I suspect it will not have the same subnet. I asked if they could assign Hubitat the same IP address and they told me they could not. However, I certainly will ask and see. They can assign the DHCP however.

If they give the hub a reserved IP in the new router's DHCP settings, you should be all good, nothing will change as long as they set up the same IP address range as your current router, as Rick is advising.

You can set the subnet yourself or ask the tech to.

I did not now that. Sorry I am learning all this stuff. I will definitely ask the tech to do that. So dumb question. If the subnet is the same doesn't the final numbers have to be same for everything to still work?

Thank you. I will definitely make sure they reserve the IP. Doesn't sound like it will be as bad as I feared.

from your pc click start, type CMD then hit enter. At the command prompt type ipconfig and hit enter. Look at your ip addr. The 1st 3 octets is what you want.

Yes, I already have those. What happens if they set the subnet (those first three) then the last three numbers are different won't it still break the link with everything?
