Get a deadbolt

Most US residential doors have molding around them that would make this impossible. It totally blocks anything going straight into the gap between the door and the door frame. This is done to insulate the door. But it also makes it harder to do this.

Locks keep honest people honest. I'd rather someone get in that way as opposed to tearing the heck out of my door. Anyone wants in badly enough, they'll find a way. Pretty cool tool, though. For sure.

I’m pretty sure that’s a US made tool.

Every residential lock I've ever had has a second small pin that does not go into the strike plate. This keeps the latch itself from being pushed back as this video shows. So I'm not seeing that it is going to be as easy as the video shows. I do agree with @april.brandt about locks keeping honest or lazy crooks out. Even so, you really should have a deadbolt on your door anyway in my opinion.

And they are not using it on residential doors, are they? No. This tool isn't designed for those doors. Look at the doors/gates they are opening.

Unless a homeowner has a (properly designed) reinforced door, it is always faster to kick it in. I've done it a number of times myself in training. It's kind of fun, and super easy to do on regular residential doors. You really don't even have to kick that hard if you are an average sized adult.

In training I've even seen guys break down properly reinforced residential doors... But I fully admit the dudes were HUGE, and it still took them a few tries.

YouTube has about 1000 videos of it - some firefighter/first responder training, some sales adds for door reinforcement products.

My point in that? Twofold:

  1. No crook is carrying around a special tool to get in a door.
  2. A deadbolt helps right at zero if the door isn't reinforced (which few residential ones are - at least not properly).
