General door sensor confusion

So I'm confused about what a door sensor will do.... I have a handicap door opener on my front door, dad installed don't know much about except uses tuya app & has a timer 2 auto close like 20 secs but if I don't get out it will start 2 close, stops when hits my chair but if I put a sensor will it know not 2 close if I'm not thru the threshold???

I ALSO have a mighty mule gate opener 4 my backyard gate, that stays opener longer but if I put sensor when I roll thru can I have that 1 shut if I hit the sensor?

A door sensor (generally referred to as a contac sensor) won't keep your door from closing on you. These sensors just report if a door or window is open or closed.

You need something to keep the door from closing when your still going through it...I'm not sure what's available there, that is HE compatible.

Can't you just increase the timer to a longer period before it auto-closes?

For off the shelf solutions the best I can think of is a pressure mat connected to a contact sensor**.

** Some contact sensors and wire inputs for connection of an external switch to be used instead of the internal switch what would be operated by being close to a magnet.

UPDATE:
There may be a motion sensor out there that can be set to "retrigger" within seconds, however I don't know of any.

If a little creativity is possible this motion sensor module could also be connected to a Hubitat capable contact module.

This module will provide a "real time" signal of movement in the immediate area. Where a normal motion sensor will provide a signal an then wait before announcing more movement.

Hue makes both an indoor and outdoor (I have both) that can be set to a 10 second retrigger. Works great, hope this helps. -Joel
