Wish list:
Zigbee or Z-wave (I'll accept wifi if necessary)
Flow sensor, to detect when gas is flowing, i.e. there's a burner on
Ability to manually shut it off
BONUS, but not necessary - if it has an electrical hook up. In other words you plug it in between the range and the outlet so you can kill the electric.
In a perfect world, it would be able to detect when gas is flowing. You can set a rule for a specified time, say an hour, where it would notify you ("do you still want this on?") and you could kill it if necessary. If this device doesn't exist, any work around suggestion would be helpful.
I know whole-house shutoffs exist, but I would like one for a single appliance.
Install a regular lever valve inline on the gas line (doesn't have to be behind the stove, can be whereever) Use something like a dome water shutoff with it... Should work fine.
Have you or anyone else done this successfully? Any risks? Wife left the stove on last night while we slept, so it’s time to look into this….thinking of primarily cutting the gas off if nobody is home or the house goes to sleep. But with this solution I’d have to cut the gas off every time somebody leaves or we go to bed, not just when the stove is on. So seems like it would work better if there was an inline gas sensor to detect if gas is actually flowing. Also wonder if there’s any issue with cutting the gas but leaving the power on…
It can on a gas valve. I use one (the dome but any will do) to turn off my gas main if there is any gas detected.
The problem with doing that is length of time it takes to start everything back up. Even though she left it on, it was safe... I mean stoves with pilot lights are still around. I don't know of any inline gas sensors. I could suggest putting a natural gas detector near the stove in case the stove gets turned on but the flame goes out. That could trip the valve to close then. As well as an c0 detector
I have spent an ungodly amount of time looking for a gas flow detector, coming up completely empty handed. That thing, if it exists, is the coup de grace. Valve shutoffs are plentiful.
I think you meant a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Kidde and others make them. You can get them at any Home Depot, Lowes, or hardware store. They are cheap and small. This is the first thing I would do if you don't have them already installed. Any house with a gas furnace, gas appliance, or attached garage should have them. Locate and install them in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions.
Along those lines, years ago auto-correct helped me inform my family that I was installing C02 detectors in my house and they should as well. Still living that one down...
I have read about M-Bus hats for raspberry pi’s that can listen to updates from smart meters. Would assume PNG, city water, etc use these in the cars that drive by our houses each month for meter reads. I haven’t explored too much or purchased one myself but worth looking into as you may get real-time readings from your gas meter to know gas is flowing. Here is one example:
