What is the best way to reliably detect garage door opening/closing? I know I could do a contact sensor of some sort but how do I actually set it up? Or is there a better device? I need something that is not Z-wave.
The Smartthings Multipurpose Sensor has a three axis sensor and actually has device settings for using as a garage door sensor. The MP sensor is Zigbee.
A cheap contact sensor would work. This assumes that the garage door (the part that moves) is right next to a frame or something that doesn't move when closed. In some cases, placing on the traveller assembly could work. Here's a pic (not mine).
@CrazyIvan Iris contact sensors are very well liked. You can get a pack of 8 new from ebay for around $40. I like to keep a couple extra around for the odd application.
I have a multi-sensor on my garage door that I have finally migrated to Hubitat.
I have setup with the x y z reporting on, but the sensor reports the door as open when it is clearly shut.
I have opened and closed a few times, and although difference in X Y z axis' are reported the contact status is not changing from Open.
Is there a right way and wrong way to position this STT Multi-sensor on a garage door I wonder.
Or am I doing something else wrong...
Absolutely. You have to orient it a specific way. There should be something on the device backing that shows you which was is "down". What I would suspec is that you have it rotated 90 degrees if it always reads as open.
Thanks Ryan
There seemed to be an issue with the initial pairing.
I tested the sensor with a mgnet on another door and it didnt record changes.
So I repaired.
Then changed for use with a Garage Door.
You were right, when the bar indicator on the main sensor is positioned at the bottom, all works ok.
