Flume integration

Well could we just fly him out here? Tell him homemade sourdough, jam, and strawberry sorbet await!

Just got this from Flume...it's a smart move, IMHO. I hate having more subscriptions, but a one-time payment is very doable, and the price is pretty darn cheap.

After one purchase, all current and future Insight features will be yours for life. No annual fees and no subscription - just in-depth water insights right at your fingertips. Get real-time details into every aspect of your water. With Insight, you’ll save money, optimize your water consumption habits, and find out how you can make every drop count.

Huh, I think I lucked in to getting my Flume2 at just the right time when they were still grandfathering users into the "Insight" program for free - according to the app, my membership to Insight expires "Never".

I confess the whole "Detail+" thing confuses me though -- is that an additional feature (paid or free) beyond "Insight" or what... And are "Insight" and "Detail+" the only usage-tracking programs, or are there some other variations (Insight+?) of those things too... It's not very clear how/if those are related or if there are other options too.

It appears that I have access to "Details+" too, but it's not telling me anything useful or accurate about specific types of usage (toilet, outdoor, etc). But I'm guessing that's probably because I very rarely ever do their useage surveys (and when I do, I probably screw them up - "Did we run the dishwasher yesterday or Tuesday? Meh, I'll just say Tuesday..." lol)

As long as it can alert me to any water usage when we're not home (and it does!), then that's all I really care about :grinning:

Their marketing is really confusing:

It seems like the $49 option is for people that bought the hardware during the period when it was a subscription (after the grandfather period but before it was included again)?

It looks like the purchase price is now 199 including the lifetime insight program. Mine also shows I have the lifetime membership.

Thanks for sharing.

Was it $149 or something before? I can't remember how much I paid for the Flume hardware.

Ha, yes, confusing is right!

I really hope these guys make it though -- this is an impressively good product compared to "in-line" solutions that cost many hundreds more. At least if these guys go down, all I gotta do is unstrap the thing. If I commit to Flo or Phyn and they tank, now I gotta go take apart my main-line plumbing yet again to get rid of them.

Thanks to your awesome integration @tomw, I can do the one thing I really care about -- getting an alert for water running when we're away (which shouldn't happen).

And I now know it works -- our very rarely-used fridge ice machine triggered a fresh batch the other day, and Flume caught it and sent the alert. Took me a minute to realize that's what it was, but pretty cool -- it was just a short burst of water used, so I was pleased Flume was all over it.

First thought: Nice! Upgrade done! Next thought: holy moly my wife is using a lot of water for her shower! Sheesh.

Yes it was. Here is a support response to my question about the changes.

Hi Scott, thanks for asking! Because you have been using Flume for a while now, you are grandfathered in to a lot of the features that we've added over the years. We decided to just upgrade users like you to Insight for life. However, newer users that were not already subscribed to insight will have to pay a one time fee to upgrade. Let me know if that answers your questions!

Interesting...I guess that is one way to claw away an additional $50 from some of your newer customers.

I think it's a smart play -- I doubt I would've done the subscription for something like Flume, but I would be much more amenable to a 1-time buy-in. I suspect they'll get more sign-ups this way from like-minded users out there.

I think it's pretty good marketing also. When I bought mine they were promoting all of these features "as coming soon" but never mentioned there would be an additional cost. I thought about bringing that up when Insight came out but wasn't really interested in using them. I was already grandfathered in and able to use your great integration so I was a happy camper.

Yeah, I guess my point is that long-time customers are grandfathered in, and new customers from this point forward get it for free. It's only the people that bought in the last 12 months or so that have to pay the fee. Or maybe I misunderstood?

Not really, they're paying for the service along with the purchase of the meter.

Actually I stand corrected. I bought mine last April at 199. I thought it was 149.

Nope, I think you got it exactly right... I'm just sayin' that if I was in that boat, the subscription would be a tough pill to swallow but I would consider the one-time thing...

Especially if they market it as a "we know you hate subscriptions, so screw subscriptions - we're gonna do you a solid here with this sweet deal..." sorta thing -- I know the rational me shouldn't be swayed by such marketing tricks, but they can be pretty darn effective!

Yeah I bought mine for $149 so I'm being offered the $49 one-time payment so I'll end up at $199.

For me the device has already paid for itself.

Confirmed - they clarified the situation for those "caught in the middle".

I bought the original Flume over a year ago and it was almost free after the rebate from my water district. It has paid for itself many times over, even at full price. It notified me about a gushing outdoor faucet during the Texas Freeze instantly.

I was disappointed to see that only the Flume II integrates with Hubitat. Well, my batteries finally gave out and Flume offered a Flume II for $99 so I accepted thinking that I could integrate with Hubitat.

While waiting for the Flume II, I replaced the batteries and my old Flume is working perfectly again.

My Flume II arrived yesterday. What is everyone doing with the Hubitat integration? I would rather not pay any additional fees - on principle - even though it is a great product that I wouldn't mind supporting.

I see lots of challenges with the Hubitat integration.

Should I stay with what is not broken?

I could give the Flume II to one of my children. I wonder what the Flume folks would think about that.

Suggestions?
