With the help of the team I have now successfully included one of these that is attached to a pressure pad. So Open is idle and Closed is Active.
I have added to the Dashboard as a contact tile but shows Green as Open and White as Closed.
Is there a way to change this around and also add the battery level?
Try the "multi" attribute. It should show contact, battery, and temp, if temp is available.
Regarding colors, you can set custom colors for whatever attribute you end up using.

Template colors are kinda frustrating to work with, you may have to set them a few times before they stick.
I see what you mean about making them stick

Working now, added Icon & background colours and works as you describe
