Feedback: Clarification of swap versus replace device

Correct. The only thing swapped is the DNI.

Forgive me for needing better understanding, what is the logic behind swapping this way?
If i want to physically swap some hardware, either new for old or from one location to another, i would assume the "swap function" is the go-to solution. Why would the selected devices in the HE environment get swapped everywhere (within HE) except the assigned room/location?

thanks

It works the way it should, if you think about it. Or perhaps we use it differently. The use case that brings this up for me is that I frequently swap (true swap) like devices as part of troubleshooting. I want to find out if it is the device itself, or something environmental or the contexts in which I am using the device is the issue.

I have sensor with DNI 123 in my plastic mailbox more than 100 feet from the house. There's no way this should work reliably but it has for years. It stopped reporting recently. I took sensor DNI 123 and swapped it with DNI 456 which is a sensor in the bedroom.

Device swap changed only the two DNIs to exactly represent the physical swap. DNI 456 was now the mailbox sensor. DNI 123 was now the bedroom sensor, participated in the bedroom rules, and was located in the room "Bedroom". Are you suggesting that the rooms should follow the DNI so that the sensor 456 be in the "Bedroom"? I don't think you'd want it to work that way.

In fact, it is more correct to say that nothing gets swapped except the DNI.

Yep ^^^^^ this ^^^^^

It was very easy to accomplish, and for the investment the payoff is quite nice. It's not a be-all end-all device swap mechanism -- that one is still waiting somewhere down the priority list.
