I'm just a beginner with HE. Set up a RM rule as a test before implementing on a garage door.
Using presence of my phone (HE App Geofencing, not Life360) to turn on Driveway lights for 5 mins. Tested successfully last night. This morning I checked the logs and found it had triggered about 6:30AM, even though the phone has been in the house ever since the last test and everyone was asleep at the time? Anyone know why this could have triggered? I've seen other comments about presence triggers not happening due to GPS going to sleep on the phone. However, I have Life360 active on the phone, so the GPS should always be active. Even if it stopped reporting for a time, the "present" state never changed. Thanks for any help.
No it won't. If GPS was always active on your phone your battery would last maybe 2-3 hours.
True, guess Life360 just polls periodically, or waits for movement.
Still should not have generated a false trigger.
Your phone will poll periodically....period. Has nothing to do with Life 360.
The issue is that when your phone puts both the wifi radio and the GPS radio to sleep, the only thing it is using for location is your cell radio. Because you have life 360, which is polling for the phone's location, it is going to give the best answer it can and that is outside of your geolocation fence. So it registers you as leaving and then arriving again.
Do you currently have geolocation just set up for arrival? If so, you can eliminate this problem simply by using Modes and then restrict these actions from only occurring when you arrive and the house is in Away mode. There are several other options, but that is the simplest.
Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't really gotten familiar with modes yet to know if that will work here. However, suspecting it may not as I plan to add my wife's phone and trigger arriving with either. There would not be any consistency for an Away mode (?), the way we come and go. Also, as I mentioned, using the HE app for the presence trigger, not Life360, even though that is also on the phone. Would the HE App have the same issue using the cell location?
Is there a good introduction to modes (purpose, use, setting, examples, etc) other than the basic where to find and set them?
One other aspect is I have the Geofencing radius set to the minimum. Would expanding that to include the location tolerance help?
There is only one location for you phone. Different apps can use the location that the phone provides. I thought you were already using HE location? So, you are having the problem....so obviously HE location is affected. Or am I not understanding what you are using?
Yes, using HE location. Sorry, repeated since I wasn't sure if I was clear on that.
Also, the phone must have been using cell signals for position, since it was inside where there is no GPS reception.
So far, no new false Present triggers. However, I did add a rule on departure, just to log the events and see how it performed. It did log this morning, but not until 11:56AM. I left for work before 7AM and work over 15 miles away. Not sure what could be causing this?
