Hello. I have a C8 running 2.3.8.140. Have been running for many months without issues. Yesterday I purchased a subscription to HubProtect/Remote Admin bundle. Within hours of purchasing my hub started experiencing high hub load alerts and also failures of a bunch of zwave devices. I did a hub power cycle which seemed to help at the time, but today I am once again having "excessive" hub load alerts and strange zwave behavior. The zwave behavior is that while the zwave devices seem to be working, the setting "Zwave details" page show that the zwave topology is not correct and that many zwave devices offer only "refresh" in the zwave actions column on that page. When I attempt to "refresh" a device, it hangs in "pending" mode.
I realize that the connection between the sudden onset of hub problems and the purchase of a subscription may be just a coincidence, but I've been doing this long enough to know that most "coincidences" such as this turn out to be related to the problem. So before I go any further, I wanted to ask you all for any advice on how to get the zwave devices/topology back and to address the hub loading issues. I've done all the obvious stuff (reboot, reload, etc) but havent gone as far as to replace the database yet.
PS. I should add that I've tried removing/rejoining an affected zwave device. It works, but when I go to the settings/zwave details page, I still get only "refresh" offered, and when I try to refresh, it still hangs in "pending" mode. So I question whether my zwave remove/rejoin is making any impact towards resolving the problem
Sometimes Z-Wave issues can be caused by Z-Wave devices that are not properly paired which causes devices to route through others that aren’t really there (ghost Z-Wave devices). There are quite a few people in the community that are good at identifying those based on screenshots of the Z-Wave details screen. Could you share yours?
Something else that you could try is to power off the hub, unplug it for a minute or so, then plug it back in. This will reboot your Z-Wave radio which doesn’t happen unless the hub is unplugged.
As for the performance issue, not sure what would be the cause, but you might find helpful information in one the “logs” tab.
Thanks Sebastien for your ideas. I did try your idea of leaving the hub powered down for a few minutes to force a Z-wave radio reboot. This seems to have helped as Z-wave topology seems to be restoring...settings/zwave details/route column shows an active path). So hopefully that fixed things.
Thought I'd let you know that you were right on. I did have some zwave zombies and used a Zwave stick to remove them. My Zwave network seems to be pretty good now.
I still see a severe load on the hub when I do a startup of the Zwave radio (total power down and then restart). But this only lasts about 3-5 minutes and then the hub load goes back to normal. (2% devices and 2-3% apps). I dont get a similar severe load when I do a reboot of the hub, which doesnt reboot the zwave radio as I understand. So I'm assuming this temporary severe load upon startup might be normal with my C-8 and hopefully nothing to worry about.
Anyway, thanks again for the ideas which really helped.
Im still having severe hub load warning messages whenever I restart the C8 hub from a power down state. I suspect I have some kind of Z-Wave database problem that is causing the severe load. After a few minutes the severe load goes away and the Hub operates normally at only two or three percent loading, so it really sounds like a Z-Wave start up problem.
I've become very proficient at using a Z-Wave stick to remove zombies, so I think I have that under control. But regardless, I really suspect some sort of corruption in my Z-Wave radio database.
I'm thinking my best bet is to do a complete reset on the Z-Wave radio and reconfigure all my devices again. Before I do that, was wondering if anyone else had any other ideas before I take the big leap.
Went ahead with the Z-wave reset. That cleared up a lot of problems for me and identified a number of erroneous links between Z-wave devices and database devices. Also I can now add Z-wave LR devices to my C-8, which I couldn't before. All in all resetting the Z-wave radio was the right decision for me and really not all that much work, thanks to the Swap Apps Device feature in settings which makes re-adding devices a breeze in most cases.
