Ever seen something like this before, hub changes IP

I have a C5 hub in my shop which is about 200' behind my house. Yesterday while at work I lost connection to the shop HE hub,It is connected to my house hub via hubconnect. I did have connection to my main hub in the house. I figured my CPE device that connects my house wifi to the shop had lost connection again, as it will do from time to time.

When I got home I reset the CPE but I still could not access the hub, I then realized that the bridged router in the shop was available along with other devices, so the wifi connection was good. I then opened up my router and found that it showed the shop hub connected but it was showing the wrong IP. If fact it wasn't even an IP that should be on my network. I have it set for a fixed IP so I don't know how it changed. It should have been 192.168.1.xx but it was something like 264.953.something. something. I guess I should have wrote it down, but i just powered down the hub and restarted. It then came back on the correct IP and was working.

This is the only time this has ever happened but it was weird.

Perhaps it was a self-assigned address? Those are in the 169.254 network?

This was might thought as well... If the Hubitat hub for some reason tried to obtain a DHCP address, but timed out doing so, it would probably self-assign an IP address in the range @aaiyar mentioned. So maybe there was a network problem? Or a power blip?

  • 169.254.x.x: This is what's called an Automatic Private IP address. An IP in this range means that the hub cannot see the network. The hub will give itself an IP starting with 169.254, since it must assign itself some sort of number. When you see a 169.254.x.x address, you definitely have a problem. It could be as simple as an unplugged network cable, or it could be as complex as the network being down. A fair amount of troubleshooting is involved at this point, but the bottom line is that your hub doesn't even see the network.
