Eight sleep tracker STINKS! Is there a pre made or almost premade local bed presence sensor?
SleepIQ isn't cheap, but there is a cloud integration for Hubitat that works pretty well.
What would be very cheap would be using a pressure mat connected to a contact sensor. This definitely works well, but I have no idea how long they last.
Withings sleep pad is good, although expensive, and the integration with HE is not local.
I thought of this but won’t a heavy mattress already cause “contact closed”
Doesn't seem to. I have a 12" foam mattress (Casper) on one in my guest bedroom, and the sensor only closes when I lay on it.
I too have a Casper mattress. I have the Withings sleep pad between a sheet of plywood and the mattress and it works perfectly. Would love to know how it reads my stats through about 14" of foam material.
Most pressure mats are not designed for constant pressure. So a mattress on top will likely shorten its life span significantly
Probably why Walmart was trying to dump them for like 20 bucks...
Interesting. Do you have a link to the hardware?
Not thrilled with mine yet... Support is still trying to help me with the first of the 2 I got. The initial procedure (seems like a hard reset method to make it reload the firmware) did nothing to solve it.
Probably going to open the second one tonight. If it has problems also I do not plan on dealing with support for that one, but will start to disassemble it. Not sure if I will ever manage to make a project out of it but I know it has pressure sensor, temperature sensor, heating elements, and an RGB light in the base... So it could be interesting in the long run.
Yea, they suck big time
$11.99
$45 locally. I think I’ll go wth that if I can’t find a non cloud solution
It has an automatic self inflating air pump (like a blood pressure monitor cuff) that I assume also measures pressure and so it's really independent of the mattress weight. I have a really heavy mattress - takes two to turn or rotate it - but Withings is incredibly accurate and fast in its event reporting (in/out of bed) and monitors heartbeat too really well . In fact it really overperforms my expectations.
One aspect is that users requested no WiFi connectivity whilst asleep (health concerns) so it uploads data when you get out of bed. Getting in or out of bed are reported very quickly though - maybe 5 seconds via IFTTT .
Wow - get one that's an amazing price for a Withings and a cloud benefit is that it provides a really helpful and credible set of other analysis on the collected data.
If you can get a withings sleep pad for $45 I would go with that. The hardware, the sensor measurement software, and the Hubitat integration software have all been created for you, so there's not much left for you to do but purchase it and set it up.
Unless cloud-dependence is an absolute no-go for you, then you would most likely need to go the DIY route for a completely local solution, which will require considerably more time and effort.
Tried my second Eight a few minutes ago and it started up and connected just fine. Had a firmware update waiting for it as well. Since the second one actually seems to be working (WAF is questionable but willing to try it when we swap the sheets out) I will probably leave that one as is (unplugged for now).
The first one... unless their support comes back with something... is headed for the screw driver and other tools to see how it "ticks".
I don’t think we can do much with is but a “heated blanket” for $18 is still a win
Wow that's a great price. I recall buying 2 at almost 100 bucks each (in a specialist gizmo's store in Thailand).
I paid about the same for 2 as well. And they were on sale. But that's Canadian dollars and our currency is weak compared to the U.S
