Eero Pro 6e a worthwhile upgrade?

I have some Pro 6e. They have a Thread radio, but no Zigbee that I am aware of…

It's right there in the specs ...

802.15.4 radio (Zigbee, Thread), Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0

Yep, Zigbee. The Amazon Echo (3rd Gen) and the Amazon Echo Plus (2nd Gen) also had Zigbee.

There's nothing in the settings on the Pro 6e to allow you to turn the Zigbee radio off. The Amazon home connectivity doesn't work unless you link your Amazon account, but not linking doesn't necessarily turn off the radio.

Right, but there’s nowhere in the app where it says anything about Zigbee… It does allow me to add Thread devices, however. As I understand it, the same radio will do both, so my assumption is that the radio would be capable of doing both, but is used for Thread.

I realize these all have a radio that can do either Thread or ZB (agreeing with Sebastien above), but where are y'all seeing evidence or statement that it's on all the time?

That's a sincere question -- I'm not trying to be snotty, doubtful, or anything like that...

From what I can tell, you can turn on / activate it as a zigbee radio by doing the Alexa-linking thing outside of eero app, or you can on/activate it as a Thread radio from in the eero app, but I don't see anything saying that radio is otherwise on or active.

Edit - better clarity

You must know that eero doesn't expose too many details. They try to keep a "it just works" attitude. That's why there's no place you can turn the Zigbee radio on or off, change its channel, etc. But it's there and is a feature discussed in the eero app ...

So true!!!

I guess I just don't agree that's saying the radio is always on though -- I've just never seen evidence of it in any of my network scans.

I think you can turn it on as zigbee by doing the Alexa linking thing, or turn it on as Thread, but I still don't think it's otherwise on. :person_shrugging:

I'd contend this page seems to support my theory about zigbee anyway (see 1st sentence in the "How do I use eero’s built-in Zigbee smart home hub?" section), but I'll be the first to admit that it ain't very clear here either!

Ha - I missed that you linked to that same article  Ack, man, I'm not sure then -- it's an intersting rabbit hole!

I must say I don't have direct evidence that it is on. If you google for "eero zigbee turn off" you find people who at least think that it messes up their Zigbee mesh, and some responses saying you can't turn it off.

If you have the ability to scan for other Zigbee radios in your house besides your HE, then you probably are ahead of me in actual experience with it.
