I used the guts of a garage door opener connected to a Go Control Zwave garage door controller and built a device to be able to lower my flag to half staff and raise it back up. The Zwave connectivity works great but the dashboard tile shows “open” and “closed”. Is there any way I can edit that tile to change the verbiage and colors?

Short answer is yes, I expect you should be able to do this. The only question is how...
Colours can be changed through the Templates by clicking on the Cog icon, selecting Templates, selecting the Template you used for your tile(s), then adjusting the colour settings for that state. Replace my use of the Switch template in the screenshot below with the Template you have used for your tiles.
The text displayed will take a little more investigation, but should be possible...
