I can see HE drivers for this device online. Many devices claim to require a custom Gateway but with the right drivers they do not.

Since many places are selling just the GW2001 sensor at a reduced price, I'm wondering if the device drivers I am seeing on here do away with the need for a custom hub?

Any information/experience would be appreciated.

Per your other post, but if you are talking about the sensor ONLY and not including the gateway that comes with it, then no. The sensor ITSELF does not have the ability to send the data to anything besides a hub/gateway or display.

But if you get something that has the GW2000 along with it for example, that gateway CAN be used by the drivers.
