DZ6HD-1BZ Decora Smart 600W Dimmer physically stops working

Hi all,

I have 6 DZ6HD-1BZ Decora Smart 600W Dimmers in my setup. 3 are about 1 month old and the other are over 1 year. All are at the same firmware.

2 of the 3 new ones have had issues where they stop working all together. What happens is the switch gets turned on manually and then it wont turn off or even dim. In-fact the green light on the bottom of the switch isn't even on. The only way for me to rest the switch is to toggle the breaker for the lights.

I initially thought it was just the switch but now 2 of them are doing it. They are on separate circuits so I've ruled out the wiring to the switch. Has anyone else had this issue?

Any advice?

I had mine 'stuck' in that place too. I'd press and hold the down dim and after 3-4 seconds the green light would come on. It turns on only when the dimmer is fully off. So even 1%, which probably isn't enough to turn on a light and the green light is off. I'd hold the top dim and the light would go to about 5%.

I 'fixed it" by a variety of things... one of which fixed it.. don't know which one :frowning:

I went into programming and selected LED, which I think is what got it into this weird mode in the first place. I changed to the Basic ZWave Tool and set the max and min dim values. I then queried all the parameters and reviewed it, finding that the min (or max) didn't get set right, did it again and once I got it working I put it back to the Generic ZWave Smart Dimmer driver.

I don't happen to use the switch physically, except in the case where it wasn't working. Now it's on a motion sensor and I never have a need to touch it.

I had a similar, but not exactly same issue. A contractor removed the dimmer. When re-installing, the lights wouldn't rise above about 10%. So I used the Basic ZWave Tool to reset the max dim.

Seen this very occasionally too (like twice in a year from 50+ of these dimmers) . Quickly fixed with air gap - gently pull out bottom of dimmer bar until it clicks. Wait a few seconds and replace.

Yes, I have about 50 devices mixed switched / dimmers 600W and 1000W, all latest firmware. Every couple of months randomly one of the dimmers hangs like this but as mentioned by others for me the Air Gap does the trick in restarting it and works fine after that, so it is not a big deal for me...

Probably a bug still left on the 1.20 firmware...

Hey. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll give the airgap thing a try next time as well as maybe look at some config options.

I've seen this on two of my DZ6HD dimmers just over the past 2 weeks -- the dimmer gets into a state where it will not respond to either physical or digital commands. The air-gap pull fixed it in both cases. Interestingly, this is the first time in over a year of using these dimmers, that I saw this particular failure mode. Could be related to 1.2 firmware (I upgraded the FW in December.)

I've also seen the issue reported by @bill.d (max dim getting set to 10%), usually after I've played around with some other z-wave parameters.

I noticed occasionally I will have to pull the air gap for the same problem and it is not always the same dimmer.

I did notice I do not have the issue on dimmers that are used on regular basis by motion lighting. It seems to be ones that are not used as often, or ones that the switch itself is usually used, instead of digitally.

I was having the issue before 1.2. I only took 1.2 because I was hoping it would fix the problem.
