Dumb Solution For Freezer Temperature: ThermPro

I took out the ThirdReality temp/humidity sensor from the freezer because it has been working for a while and I wanted to make room.

For an instant visual without opening the door, I think the ThermPro is good, so far. Totally local, not connected, but will work in power outage. Also no wire passing through the door's gasket seal.

It provides a reading every 60 seconds or so. The temperature in my picture is still going down.

While this is local, it is not "smart" in the sense that it does not provide actionable data.. So if a freezer goes down, and the user isn't present at the site, there's precious little that can be done to salvage the situation.

From that perspective, ecowitt sensors are also local (in that a display can be seen locally - for eg on a tablet running WSView), with the advantage of providing actionable data locally to Hubitat, or any other automation platform.

Of course.

I've had a Hue motion sensor in there for more than a year, I'd say, on the same batteries, kicking out a reading every 5 minutes, or whatever. So, that data is available.

I have Pushover (alas, no more SendMail, for now anyway) notices when the freezer gets warm, the door is open too long (lux), etc. It's even worked during a power outage, with my hub, modem, and router on battery, along with the phone and/or laptop.

This is more with power outages in mind. You don't want to open the door, yet you want to see what the temperature is inside. Maybe you can wait a couple hours before cranking up a generator. Something along those lines.

You never know if everything will still be working with the Hue or Ecowitt solution, so you can check your phone.

Now that I'm experimenting with adding Sengled plugs as repeaters (as part of my Zigbee experiment), I'm not sure what'll happen when power is lost and the repeaters go down. Will the battery devices route back to the hub as before? If so, how long would that take?

It would be nice if this device was Zigbee and provide remote indication as well as communicate with the hub. I'm surprised that there isn't a product like that already.

Maybe there is.

Perhaps I should have used "dumb" instead of "local".
If you insist, I'll change the title, lol.

Local in this community refers to locally available for automation; i.e. something very specific in a context that is pertinent to the interests of this community. What you’re describing isn’t that.
