Our August Zwave door lock finally died. Is there a local control (zwave, zigbee, wifi) that uses existing outdoor key lock and has a external keypad?
We use the Kwikset 620 (zwave). Its just a replacement for the deadbolt, with an external keypad. It can be re-keyed to match existing locks kwikset locks. Personally its been very reliable however there are mixed reviews in the community. As with any other lock, I recommend having a good repeater nearby.
Are you referring to the keyway on the deadbolt itself?
Or keyway on the door knob/handle?
If deadbolt, you can generally install an add-on from the inside, like your August lock. Or you can replace the deadbolt with one that has a keypad on the outside and a keyway.
As @fieldsjm mentioned, many smart deadbolts can be rekeyed to use your existing keys.
I've used a Schlage Camelot Keypad (with key) on my front door,
And a Yale Assure Zigbee Lock on my back door,
which I believe you can also get with a key lock. I've had both locks installed for several years now with no major issues (other than dead batteries).
I personally like Zigbee devices, so I would recommend Zigbee version of a door lock.
I was referring to using the existing door lock on outside. Looks like August is the only one that uses existing door knob with key.
I’m sorry if it seems like I’m being pedantic, but
Doesn’t clarify whether you’re referring to the lock on the deadbolt itself, or the lock on the door knob (if it has one, not every door does).
I think you are referring to the deadbolt, but I’m still not sure.
This is what’s confusing me. August is a deadbolt. The deadbolt sits a few inches above the door knob on most doors. The door knob itself may or may not have a keyway, as I mentioned above.
But also as mentioned above, many smart deadbolts can be rekeyed to work with the lock that’s also in the doorknob.
August is not the only smart deadbolt that installs on the inside of the door. There are at least a couple others.
Exactly. My house has 6 exterior doors. I have z-wave deadbolts on 5 and a keypad leverlock on the last one. They all use the same key.
The elegance of the the existing zwave August deadbolt door lock is that you just change out the inside knob and leave existing deadbolt knob and lock. Looks like to get local control at deadbolt I will need to change out exterior deadbolt door knob and lock for electronic lock that has key and can be rekeyed
Yes, the smart deadbolts that can be installed from the interior to replace the deadbolt thumbturn, leaving the rest of the deadbolt intact are simpler and quicker to install.
But to use a keypad on the deadbolt, you’d have to replace the actual deadbolt.
Although according to August’s product pages, there is a wireless Yale keypad that can work with the August lock.
Personally, for a keypad deadbolt, I’d much prefer one that has the keypad actually built in.
But that might be an option for you if you really like August and would rather not replace the whole deadbolt assembly.
The August door lock has died. Very hard to turn now. So I need to buy another lock. My requirements : Local control, can be rekeyed, keypad outside, can control away from the home(not using hubitat), add users, restrict codes to certain days.
Why without Hubitat? You can control remote via Hubiat using a dashboard with no subscription required.
So you want local control but also remote control via cloud / Wifi? You will only get remote access without Hubitat via Wifi. There are very few locks (if any) that have both Wifi and Zigbee/Z-Wave.
Trying not to lose any functionality of the August lock with wifi and zwave. Using the August app, remotely, I could add users, and unlock/lock door. Can I do all that with dashboard in Hubitat?
Adding users from remote via HE gets a little tricky without having a remote admin subscription. It could be done but I don't think there is anything built in. I think there are some vacation rental apps out there that might be able to do it.
Are you trying to find something other than August because it failed or just trying to look at all current options?
The Yale Assure 2 possibly comes with Wifi built in and then you add the Z-wave module to it. I know for sure it has BLE built in, so even if it does not include Wifi you should be able to add the Wifi Gateway (separate plug in module that bridges the BLE to your Wifi).
I have a Yale Assue SL (z-wave only, no BLE), Schalge BE469ZP, and Alfred DB2 (Z-wave+BLE). I like them all, they each have +/- over the others.
Speaking of Alfred, I just checked and they have a Wifi gateway as well, looks like you can get a Z-wave model with BLE and then add the Wifi Gateway. Products – Alfred Smart Locks
I only have the BLE/Z-Wave on mine but using the app you can add/remove PIN codes, so if you add the Wifi gateway it should work remote via their app.
It looks like Danalock V3 ticks all the boxes. Can't figure out how to contact them, but keypad available, wifi bridge for external access via Danalock app, Zwave for local control from Hubitat. Uses existing outside key. Am I missing anything?
I think that one will work, they even list Hubitat in their compatible hubs list. It does look like it will be a little pricy by the time you get all 3 components you want.
I was thinking something like a keyed Alfred might save some money, but then you would have to get it re-keyed to your existing key (if thats even possible), so that's an extra expense. ALFRED LOCK DB2-B – Alfred Smart Locks
I ordered the Alfred lock. Thanks everyone. They said locksmith could change out cylinder in lock to allow Kwikset keys.
Did you get the Wifi bridge to go with it? You need that to bridge the BLE to your Wifi so the app works away from home if that is still important.
Yes, Wifi bridge and zwave module.
I ordered the Albert Lock db2s. I had locksmith remove cylinder and replace with Kwikset cylinder to match our other doors. Lithium ion battery. Had to have support to tell me how to charge the battery. Apparently, you remove it from lock and use usb charger. Haven't installed the Zwave module yet. I am replacing a regular switch controlling a HUE porch bulb with Zooz Zen 73. This should assist the Albert lock with Zwave connection since it is powered all the time and less than a foot from the lock. I like that I have been able to put cheap tags from Amazon that fit on back of our phones to unlock door.
Nice, did not even realize the DB2S had a built in battery. I have the regular DB2 keyless and it just takes AA batteries. Still on my first set.
