Dome Mouser

Anyone have a Dome Mouser? I bought one years ago and changed the bait regularly and never caught anything.

The bean field behind our house was harvested yesterday, which means we might have mice soon. Wanted to make sure the Mouser is working.

Researching the few posts here about the Mouser, I read that tossing a damp paper towel in the trap should trigger the trap. I can hear the zapping, and the red LED turns on, but there is nothing in the log about motion sensed.

The log only shows when I turned the switch on and off. The log doesn’t change when I toss a damp paper towel inside even though the red LED is on and the Mouser is buzzing away.

The states change when I turn it on and off which tells me it is linked to HE. For grins, I included it again, with no difference. Then I excluded it and included once more. No change.

The states change from closed and armed to open and disarmed when I turn the switch on and off.

Motion never changes to active.

Using the ā€˜Dome Mouser’ driver.

Can’t even find one of these antiques on eBay.

I have a few and they’ve always worked well, if infrequently (thankfully).

I found they do have to be cleaned regularly, especially upon a successful termination to avoid smell of deceased ancestors (theirs not mine) let alone human smell.

Besides that, I’ve never had a problem with the motion events.

Could you toss a damp paper towel in one of your Mousers and see if the motion changes to active? I am assuming it will and I have a faulty Mouser.

Probably because almost all of them are broken.

Yes happy to, but I won't be home for about a week -- could check then if you want?

Good point. I need to repurpose this and attach it to my Pat Paulsen for President sign

You have to be a certain age to get that reference.

Now back to bed gramps!

I have a brand new one sitting here. I have paired it in the past, but didn't have the heart to catch mice in such an expensive device, so it just sat on the shelf.

Man, am I only one? I've personally reduced the global population of rodents using these devices.

My mouser does everything it was designed to other than report a catch. It will still zap the meeses but won’t tell me.
While testing it the other day, I tossed a damp paper towel in and couldn’t hear the buzzing, so I held it up to my ear, not noticing the piece of damp paper towel barely sticking out. Got a pretty good zap on my ear.

@tomg, just tried the damp paper towel trick and it does zap. Last year I did have one go bad after a few years of faithful-but-murderous service, so not sure what to tell you.

When mine activate, there are actually two device events: motion changes to Active, but also status changes from Armed to Tripped. Are you seeing either of these fire?

No status change and no events. I’m thinking the Zigbee part is kaput. Not getting rid of it since it still zaps. Just need to check the LED from tine to time. Put a few Cheetos Puffs in the holder. My wife insists she heard scratching in the basement.

My recollection was that it’s ZWave not Zigbee.

A phrase I will never get to utter, sadly. I'm imagining myself sneaking into the field at night for "unauthorized harvests."

Yes. It is Z-wave.

You just gave me an idea. I only have two Z-Wave devices.

The energy meter appears to be a repeater. I know in Zigbee repeaters are a must.

Could the addition of a Z-Wave repeater correct this? If so what is recommended (other than Zooz)

How far is the mouser from your hub? And are there walls or other obstructions in between? That’s a decent proxy for your question about the importance of repeaters.

A simple way to test the theory would be to exclude the mouser then include it right next to the hub. Then do your paper towel test. If it works, you can reasonably conclude distance was the problem (and repeaters a good solution).

I sat the Mouser about 6ā€ from the C7 hub, did an inclusion by pressing the button under the top housing containing the batteries which found the Mouser already installed. I then did an exclusion and another inclusion, tossed the damp towel in the trap, heard the buzzing, but the log did not show motion changing to active. The red LED on the Mouser lit when I towed the damp towel in. The state did not change to active.

None available on eBay. Time to go back to the old style.
