Yes, this is exactly how I connect when I am away from home.
Good to know.
Now if i could only figure how to get a widget to connect to VPN on my iOS.
How is your vpn setup?
If you have a spare computer/vm etc handy you could check out WireGuard. It is a phenomenal VPN.. If you have a Raspberry PI there is a great installation script for it (or openvpn)... highly recommended..
edit: apologies @marktheknife - I may have inadvertently cut you off!!!
Lol, you know I love Wireguard as much as you do. Preach on .
Add me to WireGuard fan list ....
I'm using a UDM-Pro. I use it's VPN to get to my NAS, cameras and other local content when i'm at work etc.
It's annoying to use on iOS. I use a Z-wave garage door opener so anytime i want to trigger it before i am home i have to connect to the VPN then push the tile to open it so it is a few steps for it to work.
BTW i don't have my hubitat yet , i am waiting on it.
WireGuard is seamless on iOS.
And avaialble as a kernel module on the UDM/UDM Pro.
How is it seemless on iOS?
I can have it turn on automatically on specific wireless networks or when I'm on cellular. No buttons to push etc.
Just create a Hubitat Dashboard to control the garage door, no VPN required.
Or, set up the Hubitat Maker API to expose your garage door device via Hubitat’s cloud, and create an iOS Shortcut to call the Maker API endpoint.
Sorta like VPN on demand?
I was under the impression that would not work if i'm on LTE and not connected locally.
Yes the Wireguard app on iOS can be configured to run a VPN profile on-demand, with options for cellular or wifi. For WiFi, you can set it not to run on your home SSID.
But like @ogiewon mentioned, Hubitat dashboards can control devices without having to login to your home VPN remotely.
See this article from the hub documentation pages:
Looks like i have a lot of homework to do.
Thanks for the help.
Me too! I like that I can set up a split tunnel on my work computer and VPN only gets used when I goto the IP addresses of my hubs.
I have both WireGuard and OpenVPN on my phone and on my firewall. My tests with iperf3 from a few locations around town show WG to be between 10% and 20% less throughput than OVPN. YMMV
I’m not sure I understand. I use the VPN on the UDM-Pro. I use it on my iPhone and iPad with no problems at all. You just have to turn it on.
