Hi. The router i have my hubitat on does not allow me to setup dhcp reservation and i cant change it. Is it possible to use my own router before the main one and use it to setup dhcp for my hub?
I would have to be able to add my routers mac as a trusted device to the main router and im thinking i should turn off the wifi on the addon router.
Could this work? Im not very knowledgeable on networking.
Sometimes i can connect via mobile if i reboot the hub. Alexa app wont link. Basically I can only reliably connect via my desktop pc. Not sure if my problem is only dhcp reservation or multiple issues. If i reserve an ip address do i have to know which ip is tied to my account? How do i find that?
I have always run my own router inside my ISP's router - and generally, I setup my customers' networks this way as well over the years.
The old method is a PITA, but supported my many ISP's - it is to use 'bridging' on the wan IP. Effectively it hides the Modem /RTR of the ISP and connects the WAN IP address virtually to the WAN port of your router.
Another method, is to implement NATting - a router within a router. It's not the simplest thing to describe but is a pretty good method to use to past the ISP router. Since IPv4 assigns certain common but specific network addresses as non-routable, the implementation of NAT can be confusing to a lot of folks. 10.10.xx or 192.168.xxx - are all technically 'non-routable', so be really clear on your network design before you flip the NAT switch! No doubt others here are more versed in this area and will comment further - I was just up early this AM...
Thanks for the info. I ended up having The people managing the isp router to configure dhcp for me. It was a pain hunting down who to contact and getting it setup but its working now. I just dont like relying on outside intervention for setting up a device. I might eventually try and setup what you have suggested. Thank you.
I ran in to the same problem setting something up for my dad a few years ago. A had to have the ISP turn off the radios on his modem/router and I just used an ethernet port on his modem router and plugged in my own router. They had completely locked out any user configuration on his ISP issued one.
Have your isp set their router for passthrough. Set up your own router1. (Make sure they turn off wifi in it if enabled) This way you are not double natting (this can cause a myriad of issues)
