I had a driveway light that was without power because I was wiring my first four way switch and killed the power. Fortunately, the patron saint of non-electrician zwave wirers was looking out for me and the new switch worked and I was able to stuff the wires back in the boxes.
I did the wiring through a Sunset On routine. When I checked the log, it did show the driveway light was off, but it was more than off - it was without power and unreachable. The log did not display that the driveway light could not be reached in polling.
Is this normal logging? I would have thought that the log would kick out an error as soon as the driveway light could not be polled. Does "debug logging" need to be enabled to record these events?
There are apps that track that for you. I'm not familiar with all of the names, but if you search in the forum for device monitor the topic is large. Also, I see that there are several requests for the features. This is nothing compared to what you had to day, but if it's any consolation, I had 2 devices unresponsive for 4 months. can't believe I didn't notice that. Guess I had enough other things around that they picked up the slack. 4 months. Can you believe that?
Are you coming from ST? You're probably referring to the errors you would get from Device Health. HE doesn't have anything like that built in. There are a couple community apps. I'm using a couple of them presently to monitor my devices.
As a side note....Device Health was notoriously wrong a LOT. It's one of those thing that if you lived with it long enough it became more of a pain than a help. I had mine disabled for the longest time.
I was just thinking about your post. You can turn on app logging in most of the apps if you're troubleshooting something. I can't guarantee that would have shown up there, but something to try. If you were getting failures in your apps for whatever reason (like no power) I'd definitely look there as well. Just a suggestion.
I was on HS for 4 - 5 years, moved to Vera for 2 years and I was recently on the ST rollercoaster of downtime for two weeks. That was all it took for me to want to go back to local processing.
I think Vera (maybe) used to kick out a message when a device was unreachable. It could be a user customizable feature that allows the frequency of notification to be set. Some devices I would never know weren't working and I don't have a large system.
