I'm looking for a flexible way to search / sort devices without building overly long device name / labels. I found a field in the device info page where you can define and assign tags, which would be ideal except I can't find any way to use said tags. Anyone have any suggestions?
The only thing that I know of is to use the search field at the top of the device display.
Unfortunately, the search field looks at the Label (Name), Type (driver) and Tag. Would be best to differentiate your tag names from the Device Label (Name) and Driver.

i.e., searching, should actually be one of the ways to use tags. They are supposed to match devices when you search on the "Devices" page, for example.
Are you sure your tags are actually getting saved? A quick test for me (on a 2.5.1 beta, but I don't know how far back this goes) shows they're not, or rather look like they are but disappear once I reload the page (and are nowhere to be found again, either via search or the tag editor). That seems like a problem, but I'm wondering if it's the same one you're facing if you haven't used tags before and are just trying to set them up now, rather than them just not being searchable? [EDIT: OK, you have to "Save" the device -- nevermind!]
Just discovered that one has to Save the device to save the Tag
That was the problem, I wasn't saving them. Once if solved that I see the tags in the device list now. Thanks for the assist.
You had the right idea to use tags. First, make sure to create a tag.
It will assign it automatically, if the tag was just created.
If the tag was previously created, then select the tag you want and click the arrow down to assign it.
Make sure the tag shows on the bottom field, then exit by clicking Update.
Click Save, to apply the changes:
Then you can easily search for any tags:
