Device handler for Centralite Temp/Humidity Sensor

I've purchased seven of these for temperature monitoring and circulation control.....

They connect to the Hubitat Hub fine and are identified as "SmartThings Humidity Sensor". The problem is, the temp readings are very varied from one to the next and seem to refresh slowly and irrattically.

When connected to my SmartThings hub, they work much better! Readings are more consistent and refresh regularly (although, I would like them to refresh more frequently). However, they are reported by "Send Hub Events" and appear in Hubitat devices as "Virtual Omni Sensor", providing many states that are not actually available and missing the battery state. (I would like to be able to monitor battery state)

Is there a device handler / driver for these sensors?

I recently had one of the 3100-G's and used the "SmartThings Humidity Sensor" driver in Hubitat with no (hub) issues.

I learned the device only updates every 5 minutes and then only if the temperature has changed 0.5 °C or the humidity changed 1%. I did find mine was reasonably accurate for temperature, I did not test humidity.

I also found the rate of change to the environment was somewhat slow with a time constant of ~ 40 minutes.

I've never had a Smartthings hub but I don't understand how they could work much better. The reported temperature is the reported temperature, to my knowledge it is not modified by the hub.

I would put them all in a closed cardboard box maybe the size of a shoe box. Wait a few hours and see what each reads. It will be somewhat difficult due to the way they report, i.e. no temp change = no report.

I asked Centralite support if I could change the report rate, they said it could not be changed.

I finally returned mine as I was hoping to use in as a room thermostat sensor, but it was much too slow. Your needs maybe different.

I received centraLites entire product line recently, been poking away at it, but expect dedicated drivers with reporting preferences at some point.

2.0.5 will have some battery report updates in it.

Mike, When I was testing the Centralite 3100 Temp / humidity sensor the battery state was reported shortly after pairing. I was assuming the battery updates were controlled by the sensor firmware. It sounds like you feel there might be a way to increase the battery report frequency. Is this correct?

All zigbee devices have adjustable reporting parameters, I've seen some override the minimum intervals, but specifically with the previous centralite generations these have been adjustable.

I'll wait until I can test with your driver. I may have discounted the 3100 too soon by assuming the reporting limitations were unchangeable.

This is interesting....
I decided to try an experiment using 2 SmartThings Multipurpose sensors. 2 of them side by side, one connected directly to Hubitat, the other connected through my SmartThings hub. I'm observing the same behavior as the Centralite sensors. The sensor connected directly shows a new reading every 5 minutes and temp changes lag behind the ST connected sensor. The ST connected sensor shows a new reading every 5 minutes UNLESS temps begin changing. I am seeing new readings at as little as 3, 2 or 1 minutes, even down to 30 seconds.

As it stands now, I have to keep all sensors connected through ST and use Hubitat for automation only. :cry:

What may be even more interesting is, perhaps there is more capability in the Pearl thermostat than I currently think :slight_smile: I'm still trying to use a remote sensor with the Pearl.

Shouldn't we be able to get the same output when connected to Hubitat?

I know this started as an inquiry about the Centralite sensor, but it seems to be a general issue with the Hubital hub.

What are we trying to figure out here?

Zigbee attribute reporting is sent to the device using the configure method when the device joins. It has nothing to do with the zigbee stack or radio. reporting settings are defined by the driver and sent to the device

I did not know reporting could be modified. Centralite support told me it could not. So I guess they didn't have detailed info and/or weren't trained for more in-depth questions.

All Zigbee devices support configurable reporting, it's part of the Zigbee Home Automation profile specification that these devices are certified against.

I'm not sure why centraLite would say this, other than from a support perspective they aren't user configurable via some magic sequence of button presses.

In general there's two different needs for reporting.

In an event driver system such as HE, we're interested in attribute changes, since those are what trigger events.
This type of reporting produces sparse data sets, meaning the samples are not at a constant time interval since they are triggered by a change in attribute value.
Sparse data sets aren't so great for data collection and presentation since the x axis is usually a time interval.
In these cases you want a constant reporting interval, and aren't at all concerned with threshold changes.
While all Zigbee devices, and the more expensive Z-Wave devices allow configuration of both types of reporting, as you can imagine you can't produce both properly at the same time.
With threshold based reporting, there is no one size fits all either, If you're trying to modulate the opening of a duct damper for example, you probably want to track temperature changes in .1 or .2 degree intervals.
For a thermostat, more like .5 degrees, for general purposes probably 1 degree.

So trying to pick a happy medium is not possible.
We will be adding configurable reporting parameters to our Zigbee drivers in the future to address these issues.
