Device Check Ins/Refresh

So I noticed that my Aeon Labs Z-wave water sensors on my Dashboard were no longer reporting their status (Wet/Dry). I got a little nervous that they had lost their connection to Hubitat so I decided to test them out. Each one of them fired as normal when it came in contact with moisture, so I figure this is probably an energy saving feature. So I thought that I would build a rule to refresh them every 24 hours just to insure they were reporting and the dashboard tile accurately represented their current state. Unfortunately the generic device driver doesn't give the option to refresh these devices. Is there any other way to check in on them from time to time? Device Watchdog is great but it tells me what I already know....they aren't checking in. lol.

Honestly, I wouldn't do that. The reason most battery devices don't report unless there is a change in their status is to conserve battery. Testing them every week or so isn't that big a hit on battery, but doing it daily (or more often) is going to kill the batteries pretty quickly.

Also, this most likely won't work as the devices themselves won't generally respond to a "device status update". They will generally report in ONLY when a status on the device itself changes (wet/dry, temp, battery level, etc).

Since you are already using Device Watchdog, then figure that if a device hasn't seen any activity for over 48 hours could potentially have fallen off. With that said, I have motion sensors that haven't reported in for days, but are still functioning (my attic and crawlspace). They just receive very little change in terms of environment. BUT, when there is a change, 99% of the time they report in.

I try to only buy sensors that can also report temperature. Temperature changes are a great way to be sure that the device is still active.

Agree with this route. Most of my water sensors are with temp reporting and I mod most of them with 2 D cell batteries as well. I still do refresh once every 2 days just to feel better.

Yeah, I think I may be converting over the the Smartthings Zigbee water sensors. The Aeon's are nice but without knowing they are talking to Hubitat "for sure", it makes me nervous. Thanks everyone!
