When you have a GSD that isn't afraid of loud noises and gets underfoot when you're using a floor nailer because he wants attention.
You can understand why they are used by the military.... and it's not because they are cute....
He's an American GSD. They're bred for temperament for Show and pets. The working lines are mainly europeon and eastern block. It's usually back yard breeding that you'll find skittishness and fear (and over aggressiveness that isn't commanded)
I meant the ability to deal with the loud noise. I'd image that would be something valued in military situations. I meant it as a compliment to the breed. Other breeds also can deal with difficult situations like that, allowing them to remain calm and have a similar affect on people.
But I get that perhaps I was a ittle naive in my linking that quality to the historical use in the military... certainly wasn't thinking about any attack qualities, only the good bits...
Wow, talk about how to ruin a nice post... Sorry Rick...
Lol.... you didn't ruin anything. Yeah the working lines are bred for the same traits (they're just more agressive) The issue I was pointing out with the breed are back yard breeders. The results are terrified of loud noises, fear bite, and skittish in general. Though malanois are probably better suited to combat situations. (I would never own one, they're like the jack russles of the shepherd lines. I mean, imagine the personality of a jack russel, with the body of a GSD, and the speed of a farking chihuahua... yeah.... that's a big nope...lololol)
Hahah… man I just pictured that and got a huge belly laugh!,
@lcw731 Here ya go

I have always loved Malinois but know that we could never own one for those reasons. They are amazing dogs though. I saw Malinois mixed with something smaller in a shelter that I almost got. It was basically a 30lb Malinois. No, it was not small because it was just a puppy.
edit - context
This knacker (actual name : "RalphDog") waits by the wardrobe whenever we're near it. Reason? He thinks the 'dot' from this lives in there. Springers.... absolutely batshit.
