I ended up adding my X4400H and it works in the device page as stated. However, volume control from the dashboard would be nice. The only action that works on the dashboard page is mute. Just wanted to see if this is even possible.

Any way to have the hub poll the AVR for power state on a schedule?
This isn’t necessarily with a telnet connection since the AVR broadcasts that it is turning on to HE. The only situation that would prevent this is if the telnet connecti9n drops which is typically caused by a power loss to the AVR by pulling the plug.
Mine is not behaving that way.
AVR was on for hours Sunday and the device event log shows no record of it seeing the on event.
Turned off last night and this morning HE still says it is on.
In my world the amp is controlled by all manner of demon, from phone to tablet to IR remote and probably some other devices too. HE does not seem to update the power state accordingly (reliably). I haven't tracked down a repeatable pattern but have noticed it's out of sync regularly but not all the time... big help ain't I? sorry for not having more gooder info to share..
I had similar issues with my Onkyo AVR. In my case, the problem turned out to be that I didn't have the "Network Standby" option set on my AVR so it was closing the telnet connection when the AVR was turned off. It would occasionally reconnect but generally required I click the "initialize" button on the HE Onkyo device. Maybe your Denon has a "Network Standby" or similar option (probably somewhere in the power options)?
Good point. I don’t recall this setting in my Denon but I can confirm that I have a ton of event history for power events on my Denon.
Ohh that's actually great news! Basically it's eventually coming...and should be here prior to 2020...
The built-in Denon device support has been working great, but there are a lot of features that are missing. Are there any plans to add additional capabilities to the device handler? What would be great is if the device handler had the basic options with the ability to send custom commands from the full API.
I'm repeatedly getting "network connection refused" after my Marantz 7010 turns on.
Is there a limit to how frequently you can issue a command?
I'm just trying to give names to 3 inputs, but it doesn't want to save them or accept them. It will add them when I change inputs on the receiver, but can't do anything in the Device setup.

Are you clicking the initialize button? You only need to do this once and shouldn’t have to click it again unless power is cut to your receiver. Denon/Marantz receivers only allow 1 telnet connection at a time so clicking initialize will cause problems.
To add inputs you need to do that in the receiver itself or via remote. Cycle through all the inputs you want to show up first and then go to HE and edit the names would be my recommendation.

Doesn’t work with my Heos AVR/Heos Link, however what I can do is:

So I just set this up and it works fine.
Question: Where can I find the device in Rule Machine (RM)? It’s not under speakers and I cannot create a custom action because there is no attribute for volume/input etc...

None of the supported AVR's have made their way into RM yet. I'm hoping they will eventually. Maybe RM4.1, @bravenel? 
You can use Custom Attribute and Custom Action.
Yes. Figured that out! You select a Custom Action --> Switch which exposes the DenonAVR, then you can select any command you want (ie. SetVolume).
@bravenel - it does seem that in order to consistently have the Denon AVR respond to my commands I must execute the initialize() command prior to any other command (ie. initialize() then setVolume(50). Might be my network on the fact that I use a Marantz AVR, but thought I would let you know.
