Dead battery replacement a'la z-wave

This must be covered someplace but I've not found it...

The battery went dead in one of my Aeotec TriSensors.

What is the proper procedure for replacing the battery?

Winter is coming so I picked up a lithium battery and replaced the original.

I, naively, thought I would just replace the battery and away it would go.

I tried letting it sit for awhile. It never connected. I tried doing the replace operation on the z-wave device page. It didn't do seem to do anything. I also tried just doing a rediscover without removing it to no avail. There were some scattered z-wave repairs in there as well.

I tinkered for quite some time after installing the new battery and I ended up having to remove the apps using it, forcefully remove the device, factory reset it, hard boot the hub, rediscover the device and recreate the apps. It only had two associated apps so not that big a deal but there has to be a better way to do this. The next time one goes dead I'd prefer not taking this path.

Just replacing the battery actually should work (Z-Wave or Zigbee). If not, something else might be wrong. Might be another story...range issues?

Back to this specific question, if you want to try re-pairing, whether normally or via Z-Wave Replace, you'll have to make sure the device is factory reset or excluded (using a different controller if you want Replace, otherwise you'll also remove it from Hubitat). A Z-Wave device won't join a network if it thinks it's already one one, and either of these ways will (usually) take care of that issue.

I had it within a couple of feet of the hub when I replaced the battery so either I didn't wait long enough or it was just one of those things.

Make sure you didn't inadvertently create a zwave ghost in the process. A battery swap won't do it but depending on how you did the forced removal that can. And ghosts will come back to bite you later.
