No dedicated settings for the composer.
Just a suggestion but would it be possible to add a direct link in the nav bar that goes to UNREAD , this could be a work around, a bit like the links to the documentation site, Support, etc. ?
I've not read all of this so I may have missed something, but can someone explain to me why I'm am getting a flag for 'NEW' posts being available when it is actually for 'EXISTING' topics that have been updated.
This seems like a very BIG backward step.
Any thoughts/reasons anyone.
I can see where they are coming from. Unread are both "new topics" and "new replies" to the topics you looked at before, but they were only counting "new replies" as UNREAD. Now they are both under "NEW" and further split them in two: (new) Topics and (new) Replies.

I suppose when I start using it with the new options it will become the norm.
Time will tell................ 
Takes an extra click to get to new replies to topics you follow. But is somewhat quicker to flip between new topics and new replies, now.
Unless you save a bookmark to the unread split....
How true... In time... all Unread posts will become read...
