I almost said it was a shame to splash all that whiskey outside the glass, but then I realized that it was only Jack Daniels. Nothing precious wasted.
On the other hand, clear ice cubes are cool 
.

I think of JD as a gateway drug to something better.
One will generally also tend to lose the ice. Unless a specific brand is intended to be cut with a little water, typically barrel-strength bourbons, ice/water has no place near a good brown spirit.
