My guess is the salesman just knows the name of one ship, and any time a customer asks he says their car is on that ship.

Every mfr leval of tracking is different.
On a board I frequent/mod, we used to be able to use their vehicle build and ship tracker for railcar and ship assignment info. Apparently they shut it down for security concerns (cartels stealing vehicles).
We have an "inside man" that can look up the specific railcar # or ship and provide to members using their specific VIN (and he cross checks the name on the order) but it's a one on one manual process for sure.

Did Toyota shut down their vehicle assembly plant in Australia completely? I used to ship aluminum engine parts to that plant and when we stopped shipping they told us that Toyota was stopping assembly operations there. They were going to import all vehicles.
Yep, it’s been gone for many years.
Our entire auto industry is dead and buried. 
Yes. Seems like we stopped shipping around the 2011 or 2012 timeframe. Give or take a couple years. I have had way to much sleep since then.

For those interested... Bathurst is on this weekend.... I'm not a racing fan, but do enjoy the coverage of this race, although I might miss it this year...
This was traditionally the chance for the two main car manufacturers (Ford and Holden) to go head to head (with a few imposters ), now it is more homogenous... But still interesting for someone like me....
I used to watch Bathurst and every Supercars race, every year, but I’ve lost interest since it became a spec series. The cars look cool, but NASCAR road racing is a lot more fun to watch these days.
For some brands, factory orders can be had with significant discounts over buying lot stock. I factory ordered a new truck in 2020 right before covid hit built exactly the way I wanted for 5% under dealer invoice.
