Cars of Hubitat

I actually think (since it’s German) my BMW’s limiter was set to 250kph (slightly more than 155mph).

Those Mercedes that were passing me (two if I remember correctly) were going significantly faster :flushed:

Makes me wonder what kind of accident/injury-death statistics they have on the Autobahn...I know driver's licenses are harder to get over there, but that doesn't mean there aren't a fair share of dummies w/licenses.

You all really need to do a track day round the Nordschleife in Germany.
It's not called the 'Green Hell' for nothing.
I've been overtaken by a motor bike and the guy riding it knew the guy in front of me and slapped the bonnet of the car while overtaking it. We were only doing about 120mph!!!!!!!!
That same day they closed it because of an accident. An ambulance and a low loader lorry went out and both came back about 10 minutes later.
Lorry had a totally smashed up motorbike on it. The ambulance, we were told, had the poor rider in it. He didn't make it home that night.
After about 10 minutes they re-opened it and all the nutters were allowed to go out and play again.
Totally bonkers but one hell of a track.

Forgot to mention that the motorbike rider that slapped the bonnet was called 'The Red Barren' and used to test the motorbikes around the track.

Nuts...

Bummer...but there is a reason doctors call them "Donorcycles." Combination of some risky riders, and people in cars just don't look for/see motorcycles and bikes. My brother had to lay his motorcyle down under an 18 wheeler once when he was cut off. Luckily it was when they were coming up to a stop light and he came out of it OK. But that was the last time he rode on streets (also did dirt biking).

Just to confirm that it’s not BS, here are the “Zoll” plates they put on the cars. :innocent: May of 2008 and June of 2011.

Answering my own question...

The relatively low number of fatalities on the Autobahn is a testament to what active policing can do, even under extreme conditions. But, still, accidents do happen on the Autobahn as they happen on roads all over the world . And with the high speeds involved, they tend to be tragic and spectacular.

On autobahns 22 people died per 1,000 injury crashes , a lower rate than the 29 deaths per 1,000 injury collisions on conventional rural roads, which in turn is five times higher than the risk on urban roads—speeds are higher on rural roads and autobahns than urban roads, increasing the severity potential of a crash.

I am offended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's been my nickname my entire life. It wasn't until I spent 6 weeks around London when I was around 45 years old that I learned that it has a derogatory meaning in England.

haha

Here in Straya, you'd be called Nutt'o or Steve'o - I think there's a law that all nicknames must end in 'o. eg Dave'o, Fred'o, etc

What's his last name?

I see, flexibility in the system.

It's an imaginary friend... Let's say his last name is Marinello...:wink:

Ok, make it Smith. :slightly_smiling_face:

The max I could do was 200 km/h on the same stretch, back in 97. But that's because we had a rented VW Golf Wagon and it wouldn't go faster.

Don’t know the stats, but when I was working in Munich in 2005, I noticed that the drivers were a lot more disciplined. Passing lane was really used for only for passing; if there was a slow down, people turned on their hazard lights to give ample warning to cars coming up etc.

Polizei would actively write tickets if you camped in the left lane. Strictly verboten. You paid most fines on the spot as well or got an escort to the nearest station.

FWIW, I got a speeding ticket on an unrestricted section of the Autobahn. There is a limit when towing and apparently a military vehicle going 160KPH with a genset in tow is frowned upon. Limit was 100KPH... I also got ticketed once for going down a "locals only" /tractor path marked Anlieger frei.

While lost on one cold and rainy night in Bavaria, my wife and I spent over an hour trying to find accommodations by following the signs to a town named “Umleitung”.
