Can't get Eve Motion Sensor to Pair

Hello,

First-time poster here. New to Hubitat and new to Matter/Thread. Pretty technical, though. I previously had a fully implemented Insteon + ISY99 setup.

For the last couple of weeks, I have been setting up my Hubitat system. I have the C8-Pro. I originally installed a ton of Tapo Matter devices in my house. I successfully connected all those to the C8, as well as my Sonos devices, my Ecobee, my Denon AVR, and some other devices.

I even used Claude Code to build a custom dashboard app that I host on the hubitat file manager and use on my tablet. It’s pretty awesome!

Now to my problem. I wanted to get some motion sensors working. I originally bought a Tapo sensor, but realized it wasn’t Matter. So I searched for Matter motion sensors and bought the Eve Motion Sensors. I also learned that I needed a Thread Border Router to actually pair these with my Hubitat. So, I bought the Aqara M100.

I just can’t figure out how to get the Sensor paired.

  1. I tried pairing it with the M100 first, then using the Aqara-generated code to pair with my C8-Pro.
  2. I tried not pairing with the M100 at all and just pairing directly with the C8-Pro.

In both cases, when trying to pair with the C8-Pro, if finds the device, generates the Matter credentials, and says it connected to the C8-Pro. However, then it starts “searching for device,” and it never finds it.

I’ve searched a bunch online, but can’t seem to figure this out.

Any pointers or suggestions?

Thanks very much.

My suggestion would be to share individual devices from your M100 to Hubitat rather than the M100 as a Bridge itself, unless maybe you think you'll have a ton of devices and it would be easier that way for some reason. The M100 isn't the best Thread Border Router from what I've read, so I probably wouldn't recommend "a ton of devices" with one in the first place, but that's another issue. (I used an Apple TV and Apple HomePod I already had that happened to offer these features, but if you didn't already have some TBR, I suppose this should certainly work.) That's mostly my preference, but I find individual devices easier to work with than Matter Bridges, particularly if there are drivers written specifically for the individual devices like there are with this sensor.

But not finding devices at all could be another issue. Is your hub on the same LAN as the M100? Matter relies on mDNS, so that kind of traffic has to be routable between the two devices, and people with overly complicated home networks often set themselves up for failure.

This doc also has some general information and tips and would be good to read since it sounds like you're still learning some things about Thread and Matter:

Thanks for the reply and pointers. I think I had already been trying your primary suggestion.

This was very wild.

I tried all manner of additional things, including temporarily disabling my Bitdefender protection.

Looks like my problem was ultimately a combination of issues with my older Router + the fact that I had my C8-Pro temporarily connected over WiFi vs Ethernet.

Apparently, my Netgear Orbi RBR850 router has some issues with IPv6 packets getting dropped over a WiFi connection.

When I switched my C8-Pro network connection back to Ethernet, the Eve sensor pairing worked fine!

And for the record, my configuration steps (minus all the router/network issues) were:

Setup the M100 per it’s instructions.

Do NOT pair the Motion Sensors to the M100.

Pair the Motion Sensors directly to the C8-Pro using the Matter codes from the Sensors themselves.
