I have been using Hubitat for about 3 weeks now. I have only moved 6 items items from Smart Things so far and I have been trying to decide if I want to move everything or just go completely back to Smart Things.
One issue I am having is that I can not access my Hubitat from my laptop unless I have recently accessed it from my desk top PC. I have set the IP address to be constant so that is not the problem. The desk top is connected by wire to my network and the laptop is wireless. Everything is on the same network. I also can not connect on my phone unless I have recently connected to the hub from the desk top PC.
Also ... will I have to wait for the hub to initialize before accessing a dashboard? I hope not ... that would be terrible. So what am I missing?
It sounds like you are having a ARP issue. Have you tried rebooting your router and/or wireless router yet ?
Just to be clear you are NOT using a double NAT cause that WILL cause trouble.
I have rebooted the Hubitat and that did not help. I am using two wireless routers but the second router is configured as only a hot spot. Not sure why this should cause a problem but perhaps it is a problem. The Hubitat is connected to the hot spot-only router. Everything is still on the same network. This is not a problem for Smart Things.
Is it normal for the Hubitat to have to restart/initialize when I have not accessed it for a few hours? That's what is happening
Umm I didn't say reboot Hubitat..... I asked if you rebooted your ROUTER and/or WIRELESS router.
Also if your computer IP is 192.168.0.x and the hub's IP is 192.168.1.x that is a double NAT and Hubitat will be very difficult to control because the ARP table will never find HE
The HE address is 192.168.1.68. And my PCs address is 192.168.1.32. I assume this means I have a double NAT. Is there a work-around? The WiFi router connected to the internet is in the basement at one corner of my house. The hot spot WiFi router is on the main level and in the middle of the house. This reaches the whole house, while the first router only reaches about 3/4 of the house.
If I attach the HE to the first router, then it will not be ideally located for the zwave devices. And the few zigbee devices I have may not reach the HE (they are on the other side of the house from the first router).
And the laptop PC that is only WiFi connected is 192.168.1.26
So every IP on the network is a 192.168.1.X ?
What brand/model is the router that has the Hubitat Elevation hub connected to it? There are a few brands/models of network hardware that cause intermittent network connection issues for Hubitat. Hubitat Support (support@hubitat.com) has a fix that they have been testing for these scenarios. I would reach out to Hubitat Support for assistance.
Also, it is not normal to have to "wake up" the Hubitat Hub.
If you're talking about the screen with the light flare animation and literally the word "initializing" followed by a % number that progresses ... Heck No, that is not normal. That's boot-up behavior and it sounds like your hub is just constantly rebooting in a loop.
As stated -- this is not normal. That means you have a race condition in a rule or device handler.
I have a Nighthawk AC1900 Model R7000 - this is set up as the hot spot.
I have a NetGear WNDR3700v3 router connected to the internet.
I believe it was a Netgear product that @patrick mentioned on the Hubitat Live episode of known problems.
Not sure if it's your exact one, might watch this to see https://youtu.be/S_7pz5BToRU?t=1613
Good news is if it is one He states they've created a patch you'll need to contact support
Thanks Waynespringer
I sent a request to HE support Sunday evening and I have still not heard any response :(. How long does it typically take? I am starting to feel like the Hubitat hub is still too undeveloped and maybe I should take my losses and go back to focus on making Smart Things faster by using local controls as much as possible.
Below is what I sent to HE support ...
I have another issue. I thought it was weird that the HE hub always has to restart (initializing) if I have not interacted with it for about an hour. I also can not access the hub from other PCs in my network unless it was recently initialized by the one PC that is connected to the same router by wire.
This is my set-up:
I have a Netgear router (WDNR3700v3) connected to the cable modem (internet). This is in my basement in one corner of my house. I have a second router (Nighthawk AC1900 Model R7000) that is connected to the first router by wire. The second router is in the center of my house (so it reaches everywhere) and is operating as a WiFi hot spot. The HE hub is connected to the Nighthawk hot spot. I have a surface pro connected to the Nighthawk by WiFi and it can access the Hub only while it is “awake”. If the hub goes to sleep, I can only start the hub again using the PC that is attached by wire to the Nighthawk.
I do not have any custom device handlers and I have paused the three “simple” Rule 4 apps I created. Here is a snap shot of the Event log.
The IP address for the Hub is 198.168.1.68. The IP addresses for the PC attached to the Nighthawk by wire and the Surface Pro connected by WiFi are 198.168.1.X
I heard that the HE hub has some issues with some Netgear routers. Can you help?
Your hub having to restart is not normal. Tagging @bobbyD
I finally figured out what was happening. I had the HE hub connected to a UPS. The particular outlet I used has a power-saving feature that I didn't think about when I plugged it in. So when the desktop PC went to sleep, the UPS cut the power to the hub. That is also why I could only re-initialize the hub from the desktop PC ... because that was also turning the power back on. It was not until I noticed that the green LED on the hub turned off that I realized what was happening ... embarrassed. But also a happy camper now
Wow! That is an interesting one for sure. Glad to hear you figured it out.
