Cannot add device

Pardon me for a stupid question but I just bought a Hubitat and I can't get it to recognize new devices try try to install them. I'm trying to install a Wink- ZW39 and a Minoston Mini Plug in socket, both appeared to be functioning correctly when I press the button on them but and have the hub in the correct mode but they never appear on the device list. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I'm not sure what it is, any ideas?

Looks like those are both Z-Wave devices? If so, two things that can go wrong with Z-Wave device inclusion:

  • if they were previously paired to another hub/controller, you will need to exclude or reset them before they can be included into a new network ("politely" excluding them from your old hub is one way, but you can do the general "Start Z-Wave Exclusion" thing on Hubitat and put the device in exclusion mode; consult its manual for details on how to do that on the device side, or you can do a factory reset, which for most devices also erases network information)
  • make sure your hub is set to the correct region/frequency for where you live (and the devices you have). On a C-7, this is under Settings > Z-Wave Details; on older models, the internal or external radio must match the region/frequency

It's also possible you have dud devices or a bad hub, but I'd start with the easy stuff first.

Everything @bertabcd1234 said plus my own advice....

I like starting every include, every Include.. with the button just to the right... Exclude. There's no way to create a Ghost using Exclude and it has to do 90% of what an Include does to finish an Exclude. What I want to see is "Unknown device Excluded" -- that's a victory for me. When I get that it's clear I know the manufacturers requirements for entering into join process. Sometimes it's 3 button pushes quickly, some require a far more difficult 'dance'.

I see the "Unknown device Excluded" message and I briskly click Include without moving significantly. I know that my body is an effective attenuator of RF so I avoid shuffling around. RF levels were good enough for an Exclude, then they'll be good enough for an Include.

I'm all for avoiding Ghosts

Can you post a screen shot of your Z-Wave Details page? Under Settings>Z-Wave Details.

The system will not let me embed a picture nor will it let me post a link to the screen grab of my Z wave page for some reason. I'm guessing it's because I'm a new user?

Correct. That will fix itself after you read a bit and post a couple times, or maybe we can get @bobbyD to update your new user status.

Thanks, I'll try reading some more and seeing if that helps. Also this is another post that should help.

Your Zwave table looks OK for not having any devices. The concern by @danabw was that if you had failed pairings, you might have ghosts interfering with the Zwave mesh.

On the other hand, the table is completely blank, so something is going on, or maybe more accurately NOT going on.

So are you going to Devices tab, Add A Device in the upper right corner, and (as long as you know the pairing sequence) Add device manually, then Zwave.

After you get to Add device manually menu, try an exclude (putting the device into it's pairing mode) and you should get "unknown device excluded". If you don't get that, something is up. Either you are too far away, or you didn't do the proper sequence, or something. This is what @bertabcd1234 was describing above.

Start there, and get back with us once you do that sequence and see what happens. You might want to check the Logs tab and see if any messages appear during this exclusion process, and post any errors here.

What @neonturbo says looks like this:

Click Add Device at top of Devices tab:
2021-12-14 20_20_14-Devices

Click Z-wave
2021-12-14 20_20_30-Add device

Click Start Z-Wave Inclusion
2021-12-14 20_20_50-Add device

If your Z-Wave device is in inclusion mode it should join the hub.

If it doesn't join, try excluding it and then including it. Same sequence as above but before trying the Include, do an Exclude first and then do the include. Use the same steps on the device when you're trying to include it, but use the Exclude option in HE.

Click Start Z-Wave Exclusion and complete the exclude, and then repeat but do an include. The exclude clears the plug's data so it's ready to be paired to the hub. Sometimes necessary if pairing has been tried unsuccessfully, or if the device was used and someone didn't exclude it from their hub when they stopped using it.

Did you get this working @msradell1 ?

No, I'm still having problems.

I think you should consider filing a support ticket at support@hubitat.com and see if they see anything wrong with your hub. You shouldn't be having this much trouble. It isn't that common but maybe you have a hardware issue?

Did you get any errors or any messages at all when you tried the exclusion steps listed above? You aren't giving us much to go on other than it didn't work.

You did try moving the device near the hub, or the hub near the device? Like maybe 1 foot away or less.

Also please go to the Settings menu, do a shutdown, pull the power cord AT THE WALL for 1 minute, and plug the hub back in.

For the ZW39 outlet, did you:

  • Click the button on the plug 2 times quickly then hold the button for at least 10 seconds to reset the plug?

  • While in the hub Exclude mode, did you try to press the program button on the plug 3 times quickly? Did the white LED blink quickly? Any messages in the Hub logs or Inclusion menu interface?

  • Same when trying to add, put the hub in Inclusion mode, press the program button on the
plug 3 times quickly. Did the white LED blink quickly and /or did you get any message in the Hub logs or Inclusion menu interface?

Please try all these steps and let us know exactly where you are seeing a failure. You can quote my whole message and add notes on my steps above if that is easier for you.

Okay, I have it connected to the hub, now I have a different problem. I can turn the module uttered off from the control panel I hear it click in the LED light on it turns out it off. However, the LE okay D lightbulb only blinks on and then turns off again?

Does the bulb driver have an auto-off option? If so make sure it’s not active.

I'm not aware that it has an auto off option and cannot find any information that says it does.

If the driver has an auto-off setting it would be in the Preferences section of the plug's Device page.
