Can receive events on zwave, but no control actions work

  • HW Rev: Rev C-7
  • Hubitat Elevation® Platform Version: 2.3.0.124

I bought 2 hubs in the December timeframe - only have unboxed one and hooked it up.

Primarily have zwave devices (leviton switches as well as a variety of GE and energy monitoring switches).

In the very beginning, I had some issues where I couldn't control devices after the first few were paired, after having removed them from my SmartThings hub.

At one point I did a hard reset of the hub, and force removed them with my Aeotec Stick.

I added them back, and all seemed good for 3-4 weeks. Then every once in a while, it would stop controlling devices. I'd look, and I'd be getting events from the remotes I was using, but none of the actions were firing. By the time I was ready to see what was up, usually it was back operational.

About 3 weeks ago, I lost control of devices again, and haven't been able to regain it. I've resetted the hub multiple times and tried to do diagnostics of my own:

  • Still getting events from remote devices, such as energy monitors, switch on/off status, temperatures, etc.
  • My rule machines keep acting. When temperatures get low, it tries to turn on heaters in my office and the wellhouse. However, when I check logs for the devices, I never see it actually doing anything, it's almost as if its not even trying to send the command.

I emailed support a couple of weeks ago and it was forwarded to the engineering team, but I was hoping someone here might have a suggestion of things to diagnose or debug. I'm a software engineer by trade, so not afraid to dive in, but not sure where to start.

I watch the logs, and it doesn't seem obvious that devices are doing something like overloading the system, but not sure if there's a definitive way to check that (as I've read that the system being overloaded can cause issues).

Any ideas on directions to try?

Thanks!

Also, I tried to do a zwave repair, but it reports not being able to contact any of the devices, including one which has LOS about 6 feet away, and others which are within 15 feet (which show to be a straight hop).

Can you post a screen shot(s) of your Zwave Details page? This behavior sounds like you may have 1 or more incomplete pairings or ghosts.

If you do a Zwave Repair, for the C7 it is generally more successful to do it one device at a time if needed.

I went to take screenshots, and searched to understand what the ghost pairings issue is and how to identify.

I started to remove some of the ghost pairings, and the second one wouldn't let me remove. I rebooted the hubitat and unfortunately when it came back up, it had database corruption.

Unfortunately I don't think I have any recent backups, so I'll be starting over. Included in that are my automations, which I had gotten into a pretty good state. There's a chance I have some exports of those though, gotta remember where.

So, it sounds like ghost devices could have been the root cause, but will never know, since it corrupted.

Should have a few days of backups on the hub, may need to go back a day or two but better than starting over.

Per @thebearmay 's comment: You'll have recent auto backups here that you can try restoring to see if that gets you back to a usable place to start fixing your issues.
