I'm looking for a replacement for my TED1001. The data over electric wiring never really worked, and I finally gave up on it, after many years.
When it did work it was nice. I had the display in the kitchen and could take a look at it anytime, with nothing 'smart' involved. It also updated every several seconds.
I don't think I wan't to mess around with an old cellphone, etc, to create a home automation screen, or whatever. I don't have the will, and the results will probably be crappy anyway.
I started looking around for a replacement, but haven't found any, yet. I've seen Effergy and Owl, but they seem old, at this point. I'm not sure how well they work and refresh rates may or may not be slow. Have to do more research.
Can anyone recommend a standalone energy monitor with its own display?

I use a pair of IoTaWatt Energy Monitoring systems, one for each of my electrical panels. These are 100% local, storing historical data to a local microSD flash card. I was able to write a Hubitat integration for this system, that works great for my needs (notifying when laundry cycles are complete, for example.) Unfortunately, these are no longer being sold.
I did just install one of the Emporia Vue 3 whole home energy monitoring systems in my father's house. We went with the model that includes 16 additional CTs (in addition to the pair of CTs for the Mains.) I selected Emporia as it is a completely standalone system for him. It can use either Ethernet or WiFi for connectivity. It does utilize the Emporia Cloud, but there is no mandatory subscription fee. The entire systems lives inside the electrical panel, and needs to be powered by a dual breaker (240VAC) so it can monitor voltage and phase accurately. Fortunately, my dad still had an old X-10 bridge device installed, which I removed and reused the 240VAC breaker for the Emporia.
It is also somewhat future-proof should Emporia shut things down. Home Assistant users seem to have figured out how to flash this device with ESPHome. It might still be a bit of work-in-progress for the "Vue 3", but I have confidence they will get it fully sorted out eventually. 
Neither the IoTaWatt nor the Emporia Vue include any sort of physical display. The IoTaWatt relies on a web browser to display information, while the Emporia relies on a smartphone app.
However, I feel that having the historical data, as well as data for most branch circuits in your house, is far more useful that a physical real-time display sitting on the countertop. Know if your heat-pump is starting to use an excessive amount of energy compared to how it operated over the past few years... Or see a refrigerator going bad... Or a kid's gaming PC consuming 500+ Watts of power while in use!!!!

For those later reading the thread, I've used Emporia Vue Gen 2 in four different buildings for about four yers now, and they work very well. Allowed us to plan for a completely off grid home as our latest build. They work fine there, as well.

Not bad, so far.
Maybe 4 watts different than my Aeotec, at the most.
Not designed too well for hanging off the wall with power adapter, even though it's an elbow-have to get longer screws (and level it somewhat, lol).
Don't know what the story is with the backlight-supposed to come on in the evening and button push during the day. Not coming on, which is fine with me-it's a hideous bright green. I hope it never comes on.
Now I'll be all set for behavior modification attempts by my utility, well actually, the government, after the smart meters are rolled out, lol.
The back light only comes on with a button push from 6 pm to 6 am.
Even a button push during the day won't turn it on.
Battery thing. Just as well by me.
Updates every 10 seconds, just like the minimum period for the new Aeotec.
