I'm a teacher in a electrician trade school. Is it possible to have 12 or even 24 he 8 pro hubs on the same network wifi router? The hubs don t have to be nested or linked together since all students are working on their own independent small network, each representing a small house with a few z wave devices. Two students per hub in the same lab sharing one wifi connection for a total of 24 students/12 hubs.
Depends on the capacity of the WiFi router. Personally, I would suggest:
- Get an unmanaged switch and connect it to the router using an ethernet connection.
- Connect each of the C-8 Pro hubs to the unmanaged switch using ethernet connections.
The only thing to look out for is some degree of network interference by having 12 or more z-wave networks all in a relatively small space.
IMO, you're fine all on wifi. These things aren't downloading games from Steam...There just isn't that much traffic to worry about.
If you are planning on having the students perform the Z-Wave Inclusion/Exclusion and/or Zigbee pairing tasks, at the same time during class, this will be a nightmare. Devices will be paired to the wrong hub.
If you've pre-paired all devices ahead of time, to the correct hubs, then it might work.
Or a valuable learning experience to teach them how to analyze the resultant chaos and correct it.
This sounds like an awesome project! You wont have any issues with WIFI as far as the hub goes . As the others have said, you will have interference on the frequency you are running with Z-wave, especially when pairing devices to the hub. If you set the frequencies on Zigbee, you may have less of an issue when pairing 2.4.
Another alternative is a faraday cage room for the pairing process in a classroom.
If you have some time, post photos of the process! Really cool that you offer this at your school. I'm sure your students will find this forum useful too! Good luck!
That's how we did with the Vera and it worked fine. The only major consideration was when it comes to pairing as mentionned by thebearmay post is that I usually have only one student at a time pairing his devices in order to avoid pairing to a different hub.
thanks!
Clearly you have never raised a teenager...they will find a way. This is probably a slightly older group, so maybe Steam won't be an issue.
@houleccep - I also love this idea, kudos to you for a creative approach.
