C8 Hub Becomes Unreachable (Again!)

I’ll give that a try. It’s worth a shot. It’s currently plugged into power block that’s plugged into a UPS, so it should be isolated from power spikes and such. I had an unused Apple USBA block lying around so swapped it out. We’ll see what happens.

Well, that didn't do it. It froze again today while I was out walking the dog. Again, there's not really any clue as to what is going on.

But interestingly the last thing it did was to send my phone notification that the mode had changed to away. It should have logged that notification as well, but you can see from the screenshot that didn't happen. But the other times the hub has frozen were not really around a mode change, so that is probably a red herring. I'm clueless.

I really wish I'd hear from support. I know I put that ticket in right before a holiday, so I'm trying to be patient. Even if they can't see anything either, that would be something. And this does seem to be happening more frequently.

I'm almost willing to try a C8 Pro. I'd hate to spend that money and have the same problem. But I'll pull that trigger if support can verify that the hub is failing or has other hardware issues.

Hopefully @support_team can get in touch soon, possibly review your engineering logs for issues.

You said you entered a support ticket, @jabecker - how did you do that, as @rlithgow1 asked,

This is also happening on my C8. No indication in the logs as to what caused it. On the latest firmware. 2.3.9.201

I can see on my router it disconnected from wifi and ethernet around the same time it stopped responding in the logs.

Through the web page at support.hubitat.com. My understanding is that the email is no longer monitored.

Yup - good, that is the right approach and the email is indeed a dead end...

Got an email this morning from support. They can't rule out a hardware issue — although from the wording they can't rule it in either. A new C8 is on its way. Fingers crossed that this takes care of it.

To migrate to the new hub I think you will need to make a cloud backup on the current hub. Then load that on the new hub (per migration instructions in the docs).

If new hub is working good, then you can transfer your subscription to the new hub and de-register the old one once everything transfers over.

I think that is the correct flow to get the one going.

As Jeff says above, and first step will be to register the new hub to your HE account so it can see the Cloud backups from your existing hub. Good luck!

@jtp10181 and @danabw thanks. I think it should be pretty similar to migrating from my old C-5 to the C-8, yes? Although back then I had to ask to have the subscription transferred, and now there's a handy new button.

I would also add: unreserve the IP on the old hub, give that IP to the new hub, and reserve it.

Yup - that's what I did as well when I migrated.

"Sorry, old hub, you lose your IP home."

It makes things so much easier.

Did the new hub seem to resolve the issue?

Did you have wifi AND ethernet connection active at the same time?

I was going to wait until tomorrow to reply, because that will have been one week with the new hub. But so far, so good. No freezes at all. And only two cloud disconnects — which had been happening multiple times/day. The new hub has been humming along and seems very snappy. I used the same power cable and brick, so I guess I can rule those out as the problem.

Thanks again to everyone who responded and to @support_team for sending the new hub.

I marked this solved, although only more time will really tell.

Mine continues to lock up. I'm not sure what my next steps should be.

All of my errors have completely stopped since I changed my ethernet speed from Fixed 100mps to Auto. Try changing that. If it's already Auto, try changing to Fixed.

So that was all it took to fix it? Or was that in combination with the replacement hub?

The replacement hub has not frozen. I was still getting occasional cloud disconnects. That has stopped since I changed the ethernet speed to auto.
