C7 Locking up frequently

Sorry to glom on to an existing thread, but I seem to be having similar issues with my previously-rock-solid C7 now rebooting every day or few days. (It's erratic.)

I have also tried monitoring memory usage, but that doesn't seem to be the cause.

@bobbyD, can I also send a PM to you with my MAC address?

I moved your post, as your issue is not the same as the thread you replied to.

Your Hub is rebooting by itself? Or you need to reboot it to get it working?

Thank you for moving my post. I tried reading all of the other related posts and added my reply to the thread that seemed the most similar.

Hub model: C-7
Current firmware: 2.3.9.166

My C-7 hub has been operating extremely well since I bought it in Oct 2022, then in the last month or so, it started locking up intermittently--sometimes every day, sometimes every few days. When I say "lock up", I mean that the LED remains green, but the device does not respond to pings, and the diagnostic web pages via port 8081 does not load. Automations stop working. Only thing that can be done is to power cycle.

Firewall/network topology: Cable modem plugs directly into pfSense router, which then splits out via wired connections throughout the house to WiFi access points. The C-7 is plugged in directly to one of these access points via Ethernet. Jumbo frames are not enabled anywhere on LAN and also nothing has changed AFAIK with my home networking setup in the last month, so I don't see how that could explain the change. It doesn't seem to be a connectivity issue. The WiFi access points are rock solid and other devices plugged into it via Ethernet are working fine even when the C-7 does not.

Power is powered via the power supply and USB cable that came with the device when I bought it.

Devices: 16 Z-wave devices, 14 Zigbee devices.

User/custom integrations: I have Maker API installed, but I'm not actually using it at the moment. I use webcore quite a bit and have the AlarmDecoder service installed.

Past Logs: I can never see events far back enough to have any inkling of what's happening. I don't know of any errors being generated.

I have tried monitoring dbsize and memory usage--I currently have Pushover notifications set up if the RAM falls under 200MB free, but I have never gotten any such notifications.

Again, I just want to emphasize that everything about my C-7 has been perfect for the last two years, until about the last month or two ago. And last month I was out of town for most of that month, so I can't imagine what could have changed in our home when none of us were actually there. All my automations died while I was out of town and no one was there to power cycle the Hub.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Please try a reboot with the advanced option enabled to rebuild the database on restart.

If there is any wonkyness in the DB that will likely clean it up.

It is simply amazing how many strange things this fixes.

Yes try this :point_up_2:

Are the automations dependent on a cloud connection for anything or are they fully local?

Do you have Hub Protect with cloud backups? If so how often is it scheduled?

Might want to try setting up this app to track the Mem and DB Size, it will save and keep the data after a reboot. This will greatly help to see this before and after the lock-up / reboot: [RELEASE] Watchtower long-term metrics app

Do you have any idea if there were any power outages?

Is your hub on any kind of UPS?

I know where I live we have had some ruff weather recently and a few very minor power losses. If there were any power blips that causes the hub to reboot it could very possibly be some level of DB corruption and the step I suggested above would likely fix it.

Unless I missed the detail somewhere, it may be useful to know the timing of any platform updates you have applied.

First, just wanted to say thanks for all of the support and suggestions. You've been super helpful! Thank you!

jtp10181 --I don't subscribe to Hub Protect, but daily backups are happening and I also download those backups for safe keeping periodically. Thanks for the suggestion about Watchtower. It's installed now. (Sorry I couldn't tag you in this post as new users are limited.)

@mavrrick58--Thanks for a great suggestion. I just rebooted with the rebuild database option and so now we'll see if there are any issues over the next few days. And, the hub is on a UPS that should be protecting it from power spikes and other issues.

@sburke781--Is there a way to see the history of platform updates? I usually update as soon as I see the notification of a new update, so I would say it happens usually within a few days of the update being made available.

Logs|Hub Events filter on update

There is some history in the logs > hub events, but it probably does not go back that far.

Since you are updating often, if you feel like it was a platform update that broke things and it continues after you did the rebuild, you could always roll back to the last 2.3.8 release if you want to test it.

WARNING: If you set up any EZ Dashboards in 2.3.9 those will be lost when you roll back to 2.3.8 or earlier. Also anything paired as Z-Wave Long Range will not work in older releases.

You can use this endpoint to download the final version of any release (238 = 2.3.8):

HUB.IP/hub/advanced/downloadPlatform/238

Then once it downloads it will be available to install from the Diagnostic Tool > Restore Previous Version

@thebearmay: Thanks for helping me find that history of platform updates.

@jtp10181: Thanks for the suggestion to roll back to 2.3.8. I will see what happens the next few days after rebuilding database and if that doesn't work I'll try that next.

It's been ten days so far since I rebuilt the database and my C-7 is still going strong. I suspect that was the source of the problem since it was crashing within a few days previously. Will continue to monitor, but if there are no more updates to this thread, then others can assume that that was the trick.

Unfortunately I do not have the ability to embed images or URLs in my posts. Here is an image of my Watchtower dashboard for the last 10 days.
