C5 hub ordered - VPN Question

I understand that I will want to set up a VPN to access my hub when not at home. I use a Cablevision Motorola Gateway (Internet, cable, wi-fi) and it does not support VPN networks. Any advice as to what to get and/or how to go about this? Should I use one of the many services advertised on the internet or should I add another downstream router and integrate my VPN through it? I'm new to this so any articles would help. I can sort things if I get proper instructions but don't want to learn the fine details of the tech as I am setting up a small beans operation.

Just get a raspberry pi and do something like this:

One of the issues that I am coming to terms with is the eventuality of a power outage. I am going to look into a UPS or power pack backup but am concerned that if an outage lasts beyond their capacity will the hub reboot or will it lay dormant until I return home? Will it be damaged if this happens? A Raspberry Pi seems to be another computer that would leave me in a lurch, plus I would have to learn a fair amount to set it up. I am trying to find a way to avoid all of this

Hub will just reboot. Have accidentally pulled the power and was okay. RPI will just restart as well. The instructions are very straightforward but if you need help you could always post here.

Keep in mind you will have to set forwarding rules to the PI on the gateway device.

In terms of power backups - for the hubs there is something like this:

Or you could roll your own on Amazon..

What is Hubitat going to control if the power is out? Just curious.

Good question. Ha. I guess it would only inform me of a break-in via contact or motion sensors

Sometimes the power is out but the internet is not - so possibly messages can get sent etc but you are right for the most part keeping it on is preventing a hard boot which can corrupt things I guess...

You would also need to have the internet for that to work which means you need a UPS for your router and modem as well.

HE could still be able to read/operate all battery operated devices such as door/window sensors, lock, siren, water valve.. tablet dashboard etc..

Yes, thinking along those lines but would need a UPS and it would have to be a short-lived outage

Ohhh...I like that. I have a fairly substantial UPS on each of my network cabinets, but if I could shift some of the load off the UPS for some of the small devices (like the Elevation), that would be sweet.

Very cool.

Thanks for pointing that out!
