C-8 to C-8 Pro Z-Wave Migration Failure: SOLVED

Hi,

I am experiencing a Z-Wave migration failure when migrating from my C-8 to a new C-8 Pro. I have attempted the migration multiple times without success. Both are on platform version 2.5.0.143.

Migration restore reports success, reboots hub and devices are there, but zwave details is blank.

Any suggestions?

Make sure you are selecting both radios when you do the migration restore...(assuming you have Zigbee devices as well). There is a point in the migration steps where you are able to choose what to restore...

You're following the steps laid out here, right?

Yes, I followed the instructions to a T. No encryption lock enabled, checked zwave, zigbee and files when restoring, etc. For some reason the zwave restore (or maybe backup) is silently failing in the background. I have tried several C-8 Pro migration backups and several restores and none of them restored my zwave database. Not sure if there is a way to troubleshoot in the logs or SSHing into the Hubitat or something but just following what is available in the UI is not working.

Wow, surprised nobody else had this issue and solved it? Maybe I’m the only one upgrading from a C-8 to C-8 Pro

Did you do the controlled shutdown, power off, wait 15 seconds, power on, thing?

Can you control your devices from the dashboard or device pages?

I had an issue with some missing items on the details page. It was on the Zip setting. I finally was able to set it to ZWJS and they returned.

I do recall seeing something similar in the past, but couldn’t find it.

Were you using the same backup from your C8 for all migration attempts? In other words, did you try to do a fresh backup to the cloud for every migration (see screenshot), or did you just use the one for all tries?

If the original upload was incomplete or damaged in some way, it wouldn't migrate properly.

I also would do a reboot on the original hub, and be sure to check the box for advanced options, and do a database rebuild. I would do this before doing a fresh backup.

I used the create a cloud backup for c-8 pro migration several times making new backups. I tried doing a factory reset of the c-8 pro as well. Also making sure the c-8 was shutdown when upgrading the pro.

The devices show up but zwave details is totally empty and I can’t control devices … nothing happens when pressing buttons, no device details shown on the device page, etc.

Did you do a shutdown, pull the power, and wait a few seconds like velvetfoot suggested? It is important to do the unplug and wait a few seconds, the Zigbee and Z-wave radios are powered all the time the hub is powered. If they get jammed, a simple reboot or whatever else you try won't clear the jam. You must power cycle to reboot these radios.

Are your devices present in both Details tab, AND in the Settings > Z-wave Details? You didn't state where you were looking. That is necessary information.

I have fully powered off. Devices are present in devices tab but no nodes under z-wave details. I also get the error: Z-Wave migration has failed. Create a new backup on the source hub and attempt the restore again. Zigbee migrates fine, and everything else, just not the zwave database for some reason. I even tried restoring my old c-7 cloud migration backup and same thing so I think there is some issue on the new pro device. I also tried downgrading firmware drivers with no luck (FYI, I am using the same drivers on both devices).

In other words, I have tried everything normal and then some. If there is a trick, hack, this exact thing has happened to others fix, I think that is what I am looking for.

At this point I would start a support case. Warranty – Hubitat Support

Tagging @bobbyD for visibility.

I tried the warranty support and they said they would send to their service technician team but haven't heard anything back after reaching out to them several times for updates.

@support_team Please help with this migration issue.

Have you tried the migration again after updating to 2.5.1? If you did, please send me a private message along with your hub ID. I'd be glad to take a look at the engineering logs to see if I spot any clues as to why is failing.

For full disclosure: please note that migration is provided free of charge as a convenience to transfer an existing system to a new hub. Due to the complexity of this process and the condition of each individual system, we cannot guarantee a smooth transition. In rare cases, migration may fail, and users will need to start fresh by resetting the hub and manually re-adding devices one by one.

I finally got to work. I upgraded both hubs to 2.5.1.143, used the following command to force zwave zip upgrade on C-8:

http:///hub/advanced/installZipgateway718

Rebooted (hard reboot with unplug for 1 minute)

Backup on C-8 to cloud (or migration backup if no cloud backup)

Hub migration restore on C-8 Pro with zwave box checked

Restored successfully!

Congrats! Happy weekend success to you.

That likely was a coincidence. Have you tried running a successful backup on the C-8 after updating to 2.5.1, but before going to installZipgateway718?

Either way, thanks for the follow up. Glad you're all set.
