[BETA] Weather Dashboard+

This isn't Hubitat related but the Vibe-Code topic seems appropriate so I figured I'd post about it here.

I have 2 wall mounted tablets - 1 which displays the weather and the other runs HD+. For a long time I was using the Yahoo Weather app which I thought was one of the best apps for this - great backgrounds and easy to read. I used another app (Fully Kiosk) to keep it running all day. Then, at some point they started adding ads.. and no way to remove them either. I tried a few other weather apps and didn't love them -- so I created my own!

Tablet:

Phone:

At a high level it's:

  • native iOS / Android app (desktop support too)
  • rotating weather-specific backgrounds
  • dashboard mode built-in: full screen, keep the screen ON and OFF during certain hours - or keep it on with a screensaver and motion to wake (*)
  • swipe to change locations
  • multiple weather icon sets built-in
  • multiple weather data sources: Open-Meteo, Visual Crossing (requires API key which is free), OpenWeatherMap (API key)
  • multiple radar sources: NOAA or weather.com
  • multiple pollen sources: pollen.com, Open-Meteo, Google Pollen (API key)
  • multiple background image sources: Unsplash, Built-in, Select your own photos
  • landscape friendly UI

Several of the weather sources requires a free API key but everything will work out of the box with free sources. I added the other providers since these tend to be a little better but require the extra step of creating and entering it.

(*) The app is free & no ads. I do have a single in-app purchase of $2.99 if you want to enable the built-in dashboard mode (turn screen ON and OFF automatically) and add more than 2 locations. I've never charged for an app in the past but wanted to test it out.. I'm not expecting to make any money but if it can help pay for an AI subscription that's all I'm looking for.

I'm still tweaking the UI and what's live on the App Store right now is a little out of date but close enough to announce it

iOS

Android

Desktop (Mac/Windows/Linux)

Looks Great thanks !

As usual, completely cool and useful stuff!

Wondering if it could be an option for the app to open to this view, rather than needing to swipe to show the details?

Going to do the in-app purchase whether I need the extra location functionality or not - glad to be able to contribute to your excellent work!

Are you're talking about the expanded view (vs the collapsed view that just shows the temp)? The app should save that state and start back up into it again. If that's not what you're seeing it might be in the newer version. I've had it running on 2 tablets for a few weeks now - it turns off at night and back on in the morning and resumes from the previous screen state

OK, yup, so it does. I just needed to stop swiping all over the place to see that.

Just made the in-app purchase - appears when you try to add a third location in case anyone else is looking for a payment option in Settings.

Thanks for this new toy. The only thing it's missing is the Google Weather froggy on the expanded view. I love that little guy.

Wow! Looks very polished and useful!

Thanks so much for this.

Another great app. Any iPhone desktop widgets on the development horizon?

Thanks!

@jpage4500 love the app, already purchased and joined the Beta this is the BEST weather app I've found in a long time, Any way to change the pressure units from in/hg to Millibars? most weather reports around me have used millibars in their forecasts forever so it's what I'm most familiar with.

sure - makes sense; I'll just want to clean up the settings so there's a way to add it without making it too complex

I hadn't really thought of it.. I did add iOS widgets with HD+ and I kind of remember iOS being very strict about how often a widget could even update. But, I can look again.

I was initially trying to focus on the wall mounted dashboard since that was my target (and something I use daily). I figured there were already a million and 1 weather apps out there for phones that were better suited for that.. but, I'm open to any suggestions too

version 1.0.113

  • Temperatures now default to °C in countries that use Celsius
  • New Units screen: pick temperature and pressure units, including millibars
  • New Radar Options: choose the radar source, base map and zoom level
  • Outside the US, radar now defaults to weather.com
  • Tap the Details or Pollen card for a larger view with more information
  • The full-screen radar and hourly forecast popups make better use of the screen
  • Weather settings are now grouped under a single Weather Settings row

The biggest changes were adding setting for NOAA Radar (base map, zoom level) and units display. There's also larger versions of pollen and details too when clicked

I should mention it will probably take a few days to make it to both app stores - production. The beta/TestFlight versions are faster (but still a day or 2)

@jpage4500 the update came across shortly after you posted this Thank you so much I will be recommending this app to everyone I know

version 1.0.117

  • Settings: Card Size is now a 70%–160% slider that resizes the cards as you drag it
  • Card Size now applies to every card, not just Today and Forecast
  • Tablet: cards in the two-column layout are now all the same height
  • Settings: new Current Temp Size slider for the current temperature and conditions

2 new settings were added to control the main temperature text and the size of the cards.

The other change is to make the card sizes consistent - best seen on a tablet with 2 cards side by side:

The basic idea is to be able to adjust sizes to you can get all of the cards displayed to fit on a single screen. I could just auto size everything to always fit but that would leave out extra detail for others who might want to have it or smaller devices where scrolling is needed (ie: phones)

This is a really nice app, polished and easy to use. One thing I miss is the forecast and actual amounts of rain...I can see rain is coming/here, and I can see the relative amounts via the blue bars, but no idea how many inches are forecast or have fallen, which is what I really want to know about rain. Is that possible to add?

I like knowing the rain totals too so let me see if/how that can be worked in without making the screen overcrowded.. that's one thing I'm trying be be careful of - that screenshot above is from a tablet of mine and I want to make sure it's readable from a distance.

Here's what I've got so far...

  1. add expected or current totals to the current temp status line. Right now that line is only displayed when the view is collapsed like the screenshot below though but I'm thinking of a way to have it show up when expanded too

  1. add rain totals to the dialog that shows up when you click the forecast tile. Since you have to tap to see this I'm not as worried about adding more details -- plus there's plenty of room since it's the only thing to show

I'll keep thinking about it.. it's the right time of year to test rainfall (at least for me)

Thanks very much, get what you say about not crowding things too much.

Re above, the expected value for the day is usually the key info I'm looking for first, then the timing of when it's coming. So if it is one or the other at the top level, then my request would be that day's expected total rain.

The rain totals in the detail look good, and really like the added "heaviest 11am" addition, perfect for me. :+1:

I just installed the Android version. Looks great, as an avid cyclist and former sailor, what is missing for me is hourly forecasted wind speed and direction which I currently use from the wunderground app. As much as is possible I prefer to ride out into the wind and blow home

That would be nice (maybe in my case more for knowing when a Santa Ana is coming...).

All we want Joe, is everything, and we want it now.

Does Windy have an integration? That is what I usually defer to for my biking.

I use wunderground. Very local, quite accurate localized predictions for speed and direction by the hour. An Ambient home weather station that reports to wunderground as well. It knows what now is but not so much three hours from now or tomorrow at 10 am.
