Nice! The house I bought about 18 months ago has none.
Fortunately, I hav 1 coax run from basement to 1st floor and from basement to 2nd floor so I can at least have wired backhauls for APs using MOCA adapters. ISP enters house in basement. I then ran a couple Cat6 runs thru attic for 2nd floor.
Can your UDM operate as a shadow device (or whatever they called it) for immediate fail-over? I cannot remember if it has to be the exact same model, or similar ones will work...
I am pretty sure they need to be identical devices for the automatic failover feature to work. They may also need to be UDM Pro, UDM SE, or UDM Pro Max class machines for the failover feature to even be available - but I am not sure about that.
Update: Yep, both devices have to be identical, and must be the rack-mountable UDM hardware for 'Shadow Mode' to be available.
Curious about my impending migration from ER12 to the UCG Ultra.
Since the ER line isn't supported by the Network App, it's treated like a third party device and its settings are managed separately on the ER. So my VLANs, IP reservations, etc., are defined on my ER. The network app currently runs on a pi and manages my two Unifi APs. Couple questions...
Any compelling reasons why I should prefer to move to running the network app on the UCG Ultra instead of the pi? Aside from the "The pi is an extra piece of HW" angle.
If I did want to move to running the Network app on the UCG Ultra, can I restore a backup of the Network app from the pi to the UCG, so my already adopted APs are carried over?
If I stay on the pi, I assume I can simply adopt the gateway (since I don't have a gateway in the Network app currently) and then create my VLANs, adjust other settings as required, etc.
Crazy talk?
EDIT: I did just find this on Reddit but haven't confirmed it yet...I had thought I could keep running the Network app on my pi if I wanted to...
When you install the UCG Ultra, you will need to migrate your Unifi A network controller from the CKG2 to the Ultra. You can still run other Unifi apps on the Cloudkey, but network will have to run on the Ultra.
Yup - you're right, that's what I'm finding as well, Network app must run on the UCG.
That's good to know, and makes sense. Looks like the migration from ER to Ultra will be somewhat manual.
My cousin pinged me and his migration is done/went w/out issue, and he said I should have the Ultra by the middle of the week. My five Flex switches arrive that day as well, and the 8 port Lite POE arrives tomorrow, so I'm going to be armed (w/HW, at least) and very dangerous soon.
I'm thinking about ordering a Cloud Gateway Max from Unifi and gifting the Cloud Gateway Ultra my cousin is shipping to me to one of my buddies who wants to move to Unifi.
If you're not planning on using any UniFi Protect cameras soon, the UCH Ultra should be more than adequate for your needs. Later on, if you decide to migrate to a UCG Max, or a UDM Pro/SE/ProMax, or whatever... it should be a simple matter of backing up the UCG Ultra and restoring to the new hardware.
Also, if I were your cousin - I my be a little upset if you simply give away the Ultra. Perhaps your cousin would rather have it as a spare router? Something to consider...
Sounds like fun is coming your way this week! Enjoy!
Damn you and your logic...but it's what I needed to hear. Yeah, especially I think you're right about my cousin, he would be disappointed to hear I didn't even use his gateway. Good call...I'll stick with it for a while. I am not planning anything w/Unifi cams (have a lot invested in Ring and most importantly the wife likes the Ring app and experience) so the UCG Ultra really is all I need right now.
I unpacked the Lite POE switch and it looks pretty cool, really nicely designed. UPS has confirmed the UCG Ultra and five Flex Minis are arriving Wednesday and the plan (mine, not my wife's ) is that I'll be full time on Operation Unifi Upgrade. One nice bit of timing is that since my she just retired, I don't have to worry about bouncing her out of a work meeting if I temporarily bork our network.
As you start changing settings in Unifi, make backups as you go in case you lock yourself out and have to reset and start over. I had that happen back when I was using the EdgeRouterX.
Really the only reasons to get the Max are the 2.5gbps network ability, faster processing for ips firewall so you can get up to 1500mpbs throughput for the firewall, and the ability to load the other unifi apps.
I had some gear that already supported 2.5gbps and knew I wanted to run Unifi Protect to get rid of some Arlo and Eufy Gear. The largest driver was to upgrade my wifi so I also wanted 2.5Gbps to support the newer Wifi 7 gear since their uplink is 2.5 minimum. Prior I was running Wave 1 AC gear and so it was pretty much at it's limits when replaced.
All that said If a UCG-Ultra was gifted, I wouldn't have gotten the Max. I would have probably just picked up a few U6+ AP's and called it a day.
Really great advice, thanks for the reminder. I have locked myself out in the past (do you have camera on me? ) when adding devices or playing with settings,so backups as I go will be the rule.
Yeah, not using a free UCG does seem like a silly thing to do in the light of day. Good perspective. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you always should," as my mom used to say as she drove me to the ER.
I'm watching a few videos about using the Network app to configure Unifi gateways/switches, and OMG, why didn't you guys force me to update to Unifi gateway/switches sooner!?! (I know, I never listen...) Going from using three different disconnected interfaces (EdgeOS on ER, Network app for APs, Netgear switches' individual admin pages) to a single consistent, integrated management interface for my entire netowrk is going to be SO nice.
Stuff is almost here...UCG Ultra and switches arriving between 10:30am and 1:30pm:
