"Phyn Plus will be out sometime this spring for $850, but you’ll only be able to get it installed by Uponor’s Pro Squad of “expertly trained plumbers and water specialists."
Even though the Verge article is wrong on the price their website says......HOLY S**T, $699, I don't see a viable path for this product to succeed......
Me either
I'm not so sure.
Water leaks are very expensive for homeowners and insurance companies. One single incident and a lot of money is gone (I had one).
Even a single shut down valve controller is expensive.
I play now with ultrasonic water sensors and the calibration is not that easy. I need them in different locations
And in this case, you don't need a lot of leak sensors everywhere (devices + batteries)
Plus the water usage. And If you can measure the flow in real time and if you add temperature sensors (rtd, not zigbee, for fast readings), you can have energy measuring too.
Ok, I agree, the price is HIGH. But if my insurance offers me a good rebate (on the unit + insurance premiums), I'm in.
$99 1 Water Shut off Valve Dome Z-Wave Plus Water Main Shut-off Valve Controller DMWV1 - The Smartest House
$96.71 8 Water Leak Sensors
$74.99 1 Hubitat Hub
Total $270.70
$699-$270.70 = $428.30 FOR BATTERIES Just to be equivalent
Hmmm, 1 point for you. If you don't need the water usage (a common regular water meter could be ok), this is quite a good solution at a looower price (but this is a very good price too comparing to a brand new one)
Ya even if you had to have a flow meter $229.99 (some probably cheaper with better searching) https://www.amazon.com/FortrezZ-Flow-Meter-Z-Wave-Plus/dp/B01EVQZ9L8
Still leaves you with $198.31 for batteries
What I'm playing with for now
But the main idea here is to measure flow and energy for various systems (geothermal and solar), quite different purpose
I was going to say, maybe you could use the Rachio flow meter? At least you also could get an irrigation system out of it. Rachio 3 Sprinkler Controller & Wireless Flow Meter Smart Water System
I am not certain if or how well it integrates with Hubitat, but there are threads about it around here where it supposedly does work.
At $329 retail for a Rachio with a Hubitat and multiple water leak sensor, you are still ahead.
That Fortrezz looks like they took a standard city water meter and added a Z-wave counter to the meter. With a quick search I didn't see where you could buy things separate, but if I were a betting man, I would guess that somewhere there is a company that makes that Z-wave counter for Fortrezz. If you could find the OEM of that device, you might be able to use your normal household meter IF you already have one. I live in the country with a well, so it wouldn't help me, I would have to start from scratch no matter what.
Same here I'm on a community well, single yearly fee for unlimited water, so for me I don't really care about usage amounts.
For those who need to care about water usage, here's a helpful tip.
The self installed version at $299 (Bestbuy link) plus a water shutoff valve comes closer to your used leak detectors and shutoff valve. Change the used devices for new, and I think it could be a wash, especially when it really isn't practical to have leak detectors everywhere you might have a leak.
That $299 is just for the "assistant" like the one that does NOT have a shutoff as shown here Smart Water Assistant | Phyn.com (Essetially performing the same function as the 8 "used" water sensors for 3x the price. Even new the sensors are $20 each x 8 = $160
For the one WITH a shutoff the price is $699 as shown here Plus Smart Water Assistant | Phyn.com
As I said
There would be nothing stopping anyone from adding a water shutoff valve. For someone with water heaters and AC units in the attic (common in the south), something like this could be a lifesaver. Leak detectors don't detect water leaking from outdoor hose connections, or toilets leaking or or. This may not work for you but for some this $299 self install model could easily pay for itself.
