Is it doing something more in the background.. the file does not even start saving to my pc till at least 30 secs after i hit backup?
30 seconds sounds a bit long, but that depends on many factors - database size, whether anything else is running at the time, etc. On 2.3.1, on-demand backups run at low priority so automations don't get bogged down.

I saw the same... much longer than normal before the backup was saved. To be fair, the hub had recently rebooted and I was belatedly backing up to protect myself against any idiocy I might introduce as I try to get my radio firmware update to take hold
