Backup and restore question

I would like to wipe my Hubitat C8 Pro and then do a restore. I'm concerned that over the many months of use, something has corrupted the data in my Z-Wave radio. So I'd kind of like a fresh start. Is it possible to:

  • back up all my data to the cloud
  • do a factory reset on my Hubitat C8 Pro
  • pair a couple of z-wave devices
  • then do a restore from the cloud backup of all the remaining devices, apps, automations, etc.?

My other alternative is to purchase a new C8 Pro and manually re-create everything.

Not possible. Restoring z-wave or zigbee data from a cloud backup will overwrite any current radio data.

This is also true for the hub's platform database. Restoring a backup will overwrite any newly installed apps/automations.

@aaiyar - Thank you! That's helpful. Maybe I'll just take a bunch of screenshots of my current configuration then!

One other related question -- the "local backup" famously don't backup the z-wave radio. How then does the restore process handle the missing z-wave details? What happens to the z-wave devices? What happens to the automations that relied upon the z-wave devices?

You will break every one of them.

The devices are in the database, but not on the radio. If you pair a new Z-wave device, and it happens to use the same number as the old one, the new device will take the place of the old one. That sounds like a good thing, but isn't.

The chances of a new Z-wave device having the same database slot is very unlikely. If you pair a new Z-wave device, it might override something undesirable like one of your Zigbee devices, a virtual device, or whatever.

I think what you want to do is this: but please use this with caution, you could break everything if you do something incorrect. Migrating a Z-Wave Network I would generally urge you to not do this unless you have a specific reason to do so.

You talk about z-wave corruption. What makes you think that? Can you post your z-waves details page in it's entirety? (Use windows snip)

@rlithgow1 -- I was able to solve my problem. I did end up resetting my Z-Wave radio, which did not solve my issue, but it did help to identify the real problem. It turns out there was corruption in my Hubitat database, which was preventing certain types of devices from being properly included. Somebody at Hubitat was able identify the issue and repair the database for me!

I got to spend a few hours this weekend excluding and re-including all of my devices! It went super smoothly.
