When a update is available my hubitats stop working until i update them. is their a way to go around this? i have a c8 c8 pro and a c7.
Hub doesn’t know/care if there is an update or not (the UI may know but the hub doesn’t) - what are you experiencing that makes you think the hub has stopped working? (I’m guessing you’re experiencing a UI interuption of some type and that the hub is merrily going on is way communicating with all of its devices in the background.)
Devices stop working. like lights that auto turn on when a contact sensor opens or motion sensor triggers then even with the app the devices do not respond until it is updated. this is becoming a issue when i am not home.
You may wish to schedule a gentle reboot every day or so. I have four C7s across two different properties that I've not updated to the new major version since it came out (may never, as I don't yet care about a new dashboard), and all are fine. I suspect you just need a periodic restart.
Couple more questions to help focus the conversation.
- All devices or just a couple consistent ones?
- ZWave or Zigbee or Matter?
- firmware version that your hubs are running on?
- Free memory at the time ( this hasn't been an issue for most for several releases but...)
Another question to add:
5. Are you seeing any errors in your log when that happens? If so, can you share a screenshot?
That’s generally a bandaid but doesn’t get to the root of the OP’s underlying problem that, as far as we know, could be entirely fixable.
Besides, the OP is already doing that whether they realize it or not.
It’s presumably not the installation of a new update, but rather the reboot that automatically occurs after an update, that temporarily resolves the issue.
I agree with @thebearmay. It’s simply not very plausible that the mere existence of a new firmware on Hubitat’s servers in the cloud, and the very simple process the hub runs to check for it and display a flag in the UI, would cause a hub to start acting this way.
@Sebastien is also spot on. Look at hub logs while the problems are occurring, and share those here if there appear to be warnings or errors.
It is not consistent with a specific device. the devices are all ZWave or Zigbee or Matter. the hubs are on the newest version, you see they dont work properly if there is a update available and i do not update it. even happens when a app has a update available. i dont know what free memory has to do with updates being available and the some devices stop working unless the update available without being downloaded takes up memory?
How often should i restart them i do it about 2 times a week along with my whole network set up
When you say updates, do you mean updates to apps/drivers from HPM, or do you mean Hub platform updates?
This correlation is anecdotal at best, it is not possible for that to be the cause of the device failures.
Ideally, never, only when you need to update.
I never restart my networking equipment either, only if needed for updates.
Based on those logs from HPM, I suspect that you are on the very old version of HPM and never updated it. There was a required update a while back due to a breaking change with the hub platform, so that it could continue to read the apps list from the hub.
There are instructions for updating somewhere. I think if you just install the updated bundle it will overwrite it and update it.
Both do the same thing. like tonight i tried to shut my kitchen light off threw the app and alexa turns out a update for govee was aval i rebooted befor the install and did not work so i updated it and boom it works. by the way the kitchen light is a sengled not a govee.
it was just installed about a month ago fresh and new.
Are there other errors that are not related to HPM in your log?
Main page of HPM, what is the version in the top right corner?
@csteele any ideas on that error from HPM above? Delete and reinstall?
version 1.9.3 as far as i can find its the newest version
Yes that is current, that error is very odd. Its probably not hurting your devices from working but still would be nice to get it fixed. You may just need to delete HPM and reinstall it. It sounds scary but it is harmless, you just run a matchup after installing it again and it will match up to all the packages again.
As for your devices, there is really no way that updating some app code for Govee (wifi) would fix a Sengled Zigbee light.
How many WiFi / LAN integrations / devices do you have? All all the devices online and operational? If the hub is overloaded with IP connections retrying constantly it can overload it make the Zigbee radio crash.
no more than 20 devices on either hub and no more than 10 automatons on either. the c8pro is new and everything was just freshly installed did not do the migrate function just to see if what you stated was an issue. it really sucks and honestly im getting to the point where a switch will work fine and i dont really need automation's if it does not work correctly. but i have invested money into it and hubitat claims it works great and its easy.
