Auto-bypass question

I have auto-bypass set for some of my open/close sensors. I thought that the system would still arm even if these sensors show they are open. I do get a notification when trying to arm the system that they are open but the system does not arm. I have the system set to arm if both of my configured phones is away for more than 10 minutes. Here are some screenshots that I hope will be helpful.

Looks like you have the 3 Auto-Bypass doors also selected under the "must be closed when arming" section. Try removing them from the latter section and see if that resolves the issue.

If I remove them, will they still be monitored when the system arms? I still want them monitored if opened when the system is armed.

I m not sure, but it would seem likely that they would still be used. Give it a try and report back with your findings.

AFAIK, it works as follows.

“Must be closed when arming” = Hubitat Safety Monitor will not arm if the contact sensor is open.

“Auto bypass when arming” = HSM will arm even if those contacts are open.

Assuming someone or something first closes the door, then opens it, (after all, the contact was open when system was armed) I believe the contact sensor is still being monitored by HSM and will trigger an alert.

Agree that this is the best way to confirm.

Here is the definitive answer, If you have sensors in the auto-bypass settings, HSM does detect when the door is opened when the system is armed. I am including a screenshot of how I have it set up.

But, I am getting 4 text messages then the system arms and one of the door sensors is open. Any idea on why I get 4 of these?

What do the messages say?

Do location (or hub; I always forget where these are...) events show HSM arming more than once?

What platform version are you on? Did you upgrade recently and notice a change in behavior?

I am on a C8 hub with the lastest version installed. Other than removing the 2 sensors from the Open/Close setting, nothing else has changed. Before, I did get the notice but only 1. The Message I get is "Arming text alert: Door - 4 - Master Bedroom - bypassed - 02/15/2026 12:03 PM)" I get these 4 times within a minute. The app logs show the HSM is only getting armed once.

Here is a screenshot of the setting.

What is the specific version from Settings > Hub Details?

What does Logs > Location Events show for HSM-related events?

Here is what the log shows for the HSM. I am still getting 4 of the notifications.

Those are still app logs, not location events. Please check this specific page:

Here is what it shows for the timeframe for this to happen. I am not sure why it is showing the laundry room door open 4 times. I am sure that is causing the issue.

The copy/paste without formatting makes things a bit hard to read, but you might have just two sets of "duplicate" notifications: one when you first tell the system to arm (i.e., when the arm delay starts) and another when it actually does (i.e., when the delay is up). Is it possible something is actually arming your HSM twice? Like a rule that responds to mode, HSM status, or something else and does something itself with HSM? That could explain the second set of things.

I can't also help but notice that the newer ones are also exactly 1 minute apart, which tells me you might have "repeat until cancelled" turned on for HSM alerts, but I don't see that in your screenshot above. It might be worth turning it on and turning it off again if you still don't/didn't have it enabled.

I was able to reproduce that first thing and am not sure if it's actually a problem or by design, as I could see it being either since there's a delay that could allow you to fix things if there's something you want to address in the meantime (e.g.,a door you really did mean to close before arming). The rest ... I'm not so sure about.

The only alerts I have set are the Arming alerts. It is not set to repeat. I am baffled on why I receive these 4 times.

I am still getting the 4 messages. But the bigger problem is that even though I have the open/close sensor in the bypass section, when the system tries to arm, it won't because the door is open. Something isn't right. Any more ideas?

Have you tried removing and re-adding HSM, setting it up like new again, to rule out the possibility of old settings, whether intentional or not, possibly getting in the way of it working how you want? I'd probably start there at this point.

I removed all of the open and close sensors. I saved it and rebooted the hub. I added them back in. This time I still got multiple notifications but at least the system did arm.

Sounds like that's not quite what I meant: removing the entire app (red button at the bottom), then adding it again and setting it up like new. Of course, if it's working how you want now, no need! I do think two notifications if you have an arm delay is normal, one when the delay starts and another when it's over and actually arms, but if you're still getting double that, this may help.
