On this Hue sensor, there aren't any reed switches. It appears they have placed a hall effect sensor on each side of the board, perpendicular in orientation to each other. Since they are centered, The magnet can be mounted on the left, right, or top. This theory also supports what the instruction leaflet shows.
For other sensors I've worked with, I purchased some very tiny reed switches that can be mounted and wired 90-degrees perpendicular to the one supplied. I have found however, that I've never actually needed to change the orientation of the reed switch to have successful operation. I won't say this will be the case with every device though.
Try your local nuclear fission research site...I hear they have some powerful magnets.
I've used a neodymium magnet in an instance where I needed a stronger magnet to trigger a contact sensor that was too far away for the stock magnet. Gotta be cafeful with them...gotta be careful, they can cause some real hurt if you get fingers between the magnet and anything magnetic.
Well, I guess it's going to be the Hue Contact Sensor. I designed and printed the carrier for the battery and PCB. There is quite a bit of detail, so I used a 0.2mm nozzle. The material is ASA for strength. This is ultimately what I had achieved with the custom housing for the Aqara sensor. It's just too bad it's flaky (without help) outside of their own environment.
This will definitely work. It's a little larger diameter than I'd hoped for, but Rev 2 may come along to shave some of that off. It will fit into a 7/8-Inch hole using the outer mounting housing (not shown yet as the final version is on the print bed). I've also managed to preserve the functionality of the tamper switch, although it doesn't seem to register in Hubitat even when the LED is flashing a warning. I'm not too concerned about this.
I bought some small neodymium magnets and printed housings for them. These will press into the door jamb just like any similar commercial product.
I should have bought more of the sensors while they were on sale. Right now they are $45/each CAD in a 2-Pack. I'll keep my eyes open for deals. Sadly, I've got three of these Aqara sensors that will likely just sit in my spares bin.
It's certainly a great thought. Finding them is a bit more difficult. They are not listed on the IKEA Canadian website. The only one there is a Matter device. If I could get them out of the US, they likely wouldn't be any better of a deal after exchange, shipping, duty & tax, and potentially an import tariff.
So, I love my Aqara contact sensors (they are working great, stay connected, have a wonderful battery life, etc.), but I’m getting the same index out of bounds error on every single one. For example:
It’s a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, given they seem to be working well, but these are the only errors I see in my logs. I guess I just want to report the issue to whomever is responsible for the driver. I’d be happy to run any tests or gather more information to help identify the issue.
